Home description
Escape to our holiday rental home in lovely Semur-en-Auxois in the heart of the Burgundy countryside. Sip wine and sample local cheeses and boulangerie treats on our riverfront patio; retire to either of our two bedrooms (each with en-suite bathrooms) after a day of sightseeing and gastronomic delights.
Our two-bedroom, three-bathroom house is situated directly on the banks of the Armançon river, with spectacular views of the medieval town ramparts through the weeping willow trees that gracefully drape their boughs over the river's calm water.
Getting to the house is easy -- only an hour from Paris on the train (2.5-hour drive), or a 4h15m drive from the Le Havre ferry port. The house is the perfect base for exploration of the local countryside, from the vineyards of the Cote d'Or to the gorgeous wilderness of the Morvan nature park.
The bedrooms in the house can sleep four people, and the house can accommodate up to six people, if two use the sofa-bed in the salon. In that case, the sofa's end tables have drawers for storage, and the doorway to the salon can be closed off with thick curtains. For further details, see our floor plans in our photos and on our website, or contact us if you have questions.
PLEASE NOTE: We have an extensive website devoted to the house, with many photos, floor plans, testimonials, and a virtual tour of the property, as well as further descriptions of the region and an FAQ. Please feel free to click the website link in our contact details lower on this page, and if you enquire with us from our website, mention that you found us via Holiday Lettings. Thank you!

The Burgundy / Cote-d'Or region
Our town of Semur-en-Auxois is in the middle of a region that is rich with historical and gastronomic treasures. Flavigny-sur-Ozerain (home of the famous aniseed mints), Fontenay (home of the best-preserved Cistern abbey in France), Alésia, (the famous site where Julius Caesar conquered Gaul), and Epoisses (with a lovely chateau and exquisite locally-produced cheese) are quite nearby.
Wine connoisseurs can explore the wine road to Dijon and Beaune, where you can stop as many times as you like to have a tasting at any vineyard that catches your eye. Or, turn instead north and head to Chablis for the marvelous wines there. Semur is equidistant from Chablis and Beaune, which makes it perfect for connoisseurs who love all types of wine!
Or, stay in Semur itself, with its many festivals and fairs scheduled from late spring to early autumn. The house in Semur is located steps away from the centre-ville, within easy walking distance of all that Semur has to offer.
Semur-en-Auxois area
Semur-en-Auxois is a medium-sized town with a charming village feel. The people are friendly and helpful, and the town clearly cherishes its history, ranging from its role in World War I to the story of its once-powerful castle (now evidenced by the stunning ramparts visible from the house). Semur is known for being one of the most picturesque towns in Burgundy -- and yet it is also a thriving, modern town with all the amenities you will need during your stay.
Any of the several boulangeries can provide you with your morning croissant, and you can sit and enjoy it at one of many cafes while you people-watch. You can purchase supplies at one of the full-sized grocery stores, or you can shop at smaller specialty shops: meat from the butcher's, cheese from the deli, wine from the excellent wine shop, produce from the weekly farmer's market. Send our complimentary postcards to your friends back at home from the full-sized post office, where you can also ship that rare antique find back home (and finance it, if necessary, from your bank branch of choice located in town).

Further details indoors: The house offers modern amenities including high-speed wireless internet, French and English satellite TV, a washer and dryer, and a fully-equipped kitchen including a dishwasher. Both of the bedrooms have en-suite shower rooms, and there is also a main bathroom with a large soaking bath. We have tried to furnish the house so that it is extremely comfortable and feels like a "home away from home." Come sit in our sunny salon and soak up the gorgeous views!
The upper bedroom has a double bed (American queen-size) and en-suite shower room (added in 2009), as well as a sitting area, a desk with high-speed internet access (wifi is available throughout the house), a walk-in closet, and a balcony with stunning views of the river and ramparts.
The lower bedroom has a flexible bedding arrangement, with your choice of either two single beds or one super-king (American king-size) bed. There is also a built-in armoire and an en-suite shower room. The lower bedroom has direct access to our riverfront patio: for more details, see our floor plans here or on our website.
The house itself is in a tranquil section of town, but is only a short walk (or a very short drive/bicycle trip) to the centre of town. Semur is a modern town with all the amenities you will need during your stay -- yet it retains its ancient roots and is full of friendly, welcoming people.
Further details outdoors: The town's medieval wall and the ramparts/towers from the old town castle are visible from the Salon, the riverfront patio, the balcony of the upper bedroom, and the upper meditation garden. The stone Pont des Minimes (medieval stone bridge), which gracefully spans the river not far from the house, is visible from the kitchen and upper bedroom.
Outside the lower bedroom there is a circular patio with a stone table and bench, shaded by the branches of a weeping willow that arches over the river. There is also a lower patio and an upper garden with plenty of space for soaking up the sun.
Further details
Due to the layout of the house and its proximity to the river, the house is not suitable for very young children. For more information, please see our website or contact us for details.
The house was built hundreds of years ago, and it is unfortunately not wheelchair-accessible. We do have railings on the staircases inside and outside the house, but please contact us if you are unsure whether the house will be suitable for you.

Guestbook for Riverfront House in Semur
The following are samples from among dozens of reviews that you can find at our website:
"We had a wonderful time in Semur. The house was just as you described and very well equipped. Everything was just perfect. Semur itself is, as obviously you know, quite delightful and beyond our expectations -- an example of traditional rural Burgundy that was just what we wanted to experience." - Cyril T. and family, Corsham, UK
"We returned today from Burgundy. I write to say how much we enjoyed our stay there. Semur is enchanting, the surrounding countryside and historic sites, especially Fontenay, a delight, and our time at your house was passed most comfortably in your well equipped and warm house. We enjoyed a very happy holiday." - John O. and family, Tenbury Wells, UK
"We've been in this delightful spot for a week and have had a delightful find. We've enjoyed the house very much. All in all, a wonderful place. Thanks for sharing it with us." - Gail, Glen, Noah, Peter E., Boise, USA
"A beautiful, charming cottage, where we had a relaxing time after 4 weeks on the go in Spain. Nice to have snacks and home cooked meal for a change from hotels & restaurants. Had a few sunny days, with everything in bloom -- made your heart sing! Spring in Burgundy is magic! Very generous spirit from the owners -- terrific Welcome Pack. We loved the salon in the afternoons. Had a lovely time here!" - Wendy and Nick B., Melbourne, Australia
