Enquire nowThe Bali / Lesser Sunda Islands / Bali region
Bali, island of the gods and demons Located in the center of the Indonesian archipelago, Bali has an area of 5633 sq. km for about 3 million. The Island of the Gods, as we like to nickname, is a true paradise it is always exciting to discover.
With a unique culture and magnificent landscapes of rice fields and friendly people and warm, Bali annually attracts over one million visitors. The tourist boom of the last thirty years has not hijacked the Balinese culture and religion. Bali is one of the smaller islands but enjoys a great geographical diversity thanks to its mountains and volcanoes. Amounting to over 3100 meters, Mount Agung is the highest point of the island. Bautur Mount (1717 m) meanwhile is still in its caldera and offers a magnificent view over the lake of the same name. The interior is dominated by mountains and volcanoes with numerous rice terraces.
Coasts have beautiful white sand beaches with a sea or volcanic often providing some rough surf spots known but also numerous dive sites with seabed rich in fish and corals.
Climate
Bali has a hot and humid climate throughout the year. Near the coast, temperatures range from 27 ° C to 32 ° C. In the mountains, it is around 20 to 25 ° C depending on altitude. The dry season extends from March to October and the rainy season from November to April with more rainfall from December to February. However, there may even have showers in the dry season but of short duration and mainly in the afternoon.
Religion
The Balinese are mostly Hindus with ancient animist traditions still very much alive. Very close to nature, they spend considerable time in prayers and offerings dedicated to the gods and other deities. We can see a multitude of altars placed near a tree, a river or at the intersection of a crossroads to appease evil spirits. The temples, meanwhile, are endless as each house has one. The most important are those of Besakih, Uluwatu and Tanah Lot yet.
Ceremonies, Balinese festivals and rituals punctuate everyday life. Each Balinese through various rites of passage such as teeth grinding, marriage and cremation which gives rise to magnificent processions.
Culture
The art, like painting or music, used only for secular use. Many Western artists who frequented the island at the beginning of the century played a role in the development of Balinese art. Among the most influential visitors, we can mention Walter Spies, German painter and musician of the 30s or the Dutch painter Rudolf Bonnet. Please find below a selection of links on Balinese culture.
What to do and see
The main advantage of a visit to Bali is to discover the rich culture and still very much alive. Ceremonies and other religious holidays are very common and Balinese spontaneously invite foreigners to attend. It is better to move away from the tourist centers to find more authenticity. Among the most visited temples, Besakih is found, Ulawutu, Tanah Lot, Taman Ayun at the temple or Mengwi Bratan. Other historical sites are also worth visiting as the bas-reliefs of Yeh Pulu, or burial chambers of Gunung Kawi. Finally, dance, music or even puppets are a must for those who love the sophistication.
The scenery is also beautiful with sumptuous rice terraces and volcanoes as impressive or Agung Batur. The beaches are idyllic but are nevertheless very pleasant, Kuta and Nusa Dua are among the most beautiful. Most other beaches are composed of volcanic sand (gray) and swimming is sometimes dangerous.
The activities can be practiced in Bali are many. Beautiful dive sites are available, including snorkeling. The most famous are those of Tulamben, small island or Menjongan Lembongan Island. Surfing is a common practice in Bali with some surf spots in Indonesia's busiest. Kuta Beach is ideal for beginners while the spots of the peninsula are reserved for more Bukh expériementés. One can also go rafting and a host of other water sports (jet skiing, windsurfing, sailing ...). And of course, the resorts offer all possible activities such as golf, tennis ...
Hiking is an ideal way to discover the magnificent landscapes of the island and get in touch with the Balinese. The Ubud area offers beautiful walks and for the more energetic, the climb of Mount Batur and Mount Agung provided stunning views of Bali and surrounding islands.
Finally, Bali is more famous for shopping and crafts. There is a wide selection of items (paintings, jewelry, sculptures, batiks, clothing ...).

We had a lovely stay at La Maison P&L. Our previous stays in Bali were in and around Kuta, and we found the location of La Maison P&L to be much more relaxing. We got a better feel for Bali and the Balinese people here and enjoyed it a lot more. Pascal and Laurent were very accommodating hosts, and helped us to book taxis and give restaurant recommendations when we needed. They have a driver who you can hire for daily trips, and their maids can help with cooking, laundry and babysitting for a small charge. Breakfast is included, and was one of the highlights each morning. There was fresh fruit, pancakes, bread, homemade jams, juice and tea & coffee. We had our six month old baby with us, and would recommend the B&B for babies and children. Older kids will love the pool. Finally, the rooms were beautiful and the outdoor bathrooms are a real treat. Response: Thanks a lot for your review. See you next time in Bali. Take care |

We spent an amazing week-end in this welcoming house. The owners are friendly and are keen to meet your needs always with a big smile. They can arrange tours all around Bali with a car and an English-speaking driver. They also shared their favourite places: restaurants, bars, handicraft shops, etc. Everything is beautiful in this house. The room is spacious and decorated with taste. You can enjoy the outdoor bathroom and the wonderful view on the rice fields. For sure, I will go back there the next week end in Bali and experience the new bungalow so charming. If you can, bring a bottle of wine to share with Pascal and Laurent, the owners, who will really appreciate it as real French. Response: Thanks a lot for your review! See you soon in Bali, we will book the bungalow for you next time! Take care |
