The South Region
The land in the south of Iceland is very fertile and good for agriculturing. There are dosens of horsefarms with thousands of horses. Also we have cattle and sheep farms. The climat is mild, at summertime its rather dry and not to windy, the temperature during the day is from 15 to 25 celsius. During the winter the temperature is around -5 to +5. Late december through mars it snows from time to time.
Just next to Selfoss is the Olfusa river. It is Iceland's largest river with an average flow of 423 m³/s. Its discharge area is 5760 km². The Olfusá has a strong salmon fishing industry. The Floi Nature Reserve is located on its eastern shore where it meets the sea.
Some 4 km from the house, we have Thjorsa who is the longest river in Iceland, at 230 km.Thjorsa has its source on the glacier Hofsjokull. When it enters the lowland it passes the valley of Thjorsardalur where the historical farm of Stong is located. Thin it goes by the Great Thjorsa lava.
Iceland rises on the Atlantic ridge, as a reasult of that we have hot springs and volcanos almost all ower the country. About 100 km from our place we have the famous volcanos Hekla, Eyjafjallajokull and Katla. Hekla is very famous for its regular eruptions, its eruptions though small can be extremly beutiful. We are at a exelent place to view eruptions from Hekla, Eyjafjallajokull and Katla knowing it could never harm the area where the vacation house is.
Thingvellir national park is only 55 km drive, Geysir 71 km and Gullfoss 61 km away from Hofdatun

There are many hiostorical places in south of Iceland and there are numerus art musseums. Everyone who come to Iceland has to take a tour called "the Golden Circel". When you take that tour you go to national park Thingvellir who is on UNESCO List of World Heritage. It is a site of historical, cultural, and geological importance and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Iceland. It is the site of a rift valley that marks the crest of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. It is also home to Thingvallavatn, the largest natural lake in Iceland. Parliament or Althingi was established at Thingvellir in 930 and remained there until 1789. Then you also go to Gullfoss and Geysir, but the Golden waterfall in the glacial river Hvita count among the world’s most beautiful waterfalls. The spouting hot spring Geysir was claimed to be the biggest one in the world. The old Geysir has been in retirement for decades, but when it was active its eruptions reached the height of at least 80 m. All around the old Geysir are more spouting hot springs, such as the ever lively Strokkur (the butter Churn), which erupts every 3-5 minutes.
In South Iceland you find all kind off entertainment. Among many other things you can enjoy art in musseums, take a walk in prehistorical places or go river rafting (for the brave one!). For further information about local attraction you could for example go to:

Hofdatun was a lovely clean modern wooden house on a little homestead in South Iceland. It was very clean and much nicer than I was expecting. The kitchen was very well equipped with all facilities and the spa bath was a massive hit with our kids. There are four bedrooms - I king, 1 queen, a twin room and a single. We rode the horses on two different occasions and collected fresh eggs every day. Thorey, the owner, couldn't have been more helpful. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and the house was well situated to tour South Iceland - the Geysirs, the Golden Circle, Gulfoss, Reykjavik, The Blue Lagoon are all within an hour's drive. A little further afield and we made it to Hekkla volcano and the hot springs at Landmannalaugar. We had a brilliant holiday and would definitely go back to Hofdatun.
