The Poitou-Charentes region

The Charente has been called 'the gateway to the south-west' but there really is no need to go any further. Those who live and holiday here enjoy the warm microclimate, the friendliness of the people, their traditional values, a love of the countryside and the satisfaction of being part of something rather special. This is the second sunniest part of France and there is a particular quality to the light that surely helps to define 'joie de vivre'. The traditional buildings, constructed in the romanesque style have mellow stone walls. The terracotta tiled roofs have a shallow pitch that is only practical where there is virtually no chance of heavy snow.

Gently rolling countryside is covered in vines with occasional fields of sunflowers for an added splash of colour. There are very few walls and hedges and there is a general freedom to wander at will. Quiet, well-maintained roads offer wonderful opportunities for cycling. The Charente is one of France's loveliest rivers with local facilities for bathing, canoeing and boat trips.

Close to Cognac, the small town of Segonzac is the historic 'capital' of the Grande Champagne, where the finest Cognac grapes are grown. This gite is in a hamlet just 2,5 km away, amidst the vineyards and ideally situated to explore the treasures of a remarkable region. The towns of Cognac (golf, castle, museums, shops, river trips) and Jarnac (river, conoeing, Mitterand museum) are quickly reached. They are home to lots of well known Cognac houses, many of which offer guided tours. Bourg Charente is even closer, with a fantastic gourmet restaurant just across the river from the chateau where Grand Marnier is produced! At Chateauneuf you will find a safe, man-made riverside beach that is ideal for young children. A half hour car ride takes you to Angouleme, or allow an hour to reach the beaches at Royan. Perhaps plan a day out in La Rochelle (harbourside restaurants, aquarium, shops) or the beautiful city of Bordeaux.
