The Paphos region

There is so much to see and do in and around Paphos that it would take far too long to detail it all here. In the next section you will find some of our suggestions for activities and family attractions however when exploring the Paphos area here are a few other experiences which you should definitely try to fit in.
Acropolis
Near the modern Paphos lighthouse is sited a complex of ancient buildings, including a Roman Odeon, built in the 2nd century AD, which has been restored and is now used for summer orchestral and stage performances. The Odeon was the focus of the ancient city centre, of which some ruins still remain in the area. South of the Odeon are the remnants of the Roman Temple of Asclepius, the God of Medicine, and north of the lighthouse are the ruins of the ancient town walls.
Baths of Aphrodite
A romantic side trip from Paphos is a visit to the natural grotto on the Akamas Peninsula near Polis (30 miles/48km north of Pahpos) where legend has it that the Greek goddess of love, Aphrodite, used to take her baths. The serene pool, shaded by a fig tree and surrounded by beautiful examples of maindenhair fern, can be reached by nature trails from Akamas.
Catacombs
A large pistachio tree marks the entrance to the underground catacombs of Agia Solomoni in Kato Paphos. The tree is a strange sight, festooned as it usually is with pieces of cloth tied onto it by the faithful as offerings, in the hope that this sacred tree will cure various ailments. The catacombs themselves were carved into Fabrica hill, below the ancient Roman city wall, in the 4th century BC, and later became chapels for the early Christians. The underground chapels feature some interesting frescoes and graffiti left by 13th-century Crusaders, and there are numerous legends and stories attached to the patron saint Ayia Solomoni. Visitors are advised to take a torch along to explore the catacombs.
The Mosiacs of Paphos
The striking mosaic floors in a series of ancient Roman noblemen’s villas, dating from the third to fifth century AD, are a must-see for visitors to Paphos. The site where the villas are still being excavated can be found about 300 metres from the Paphos harbour. The mosaics featuring mythological scenes are visible in the houses of Dionysus, Orpheus and Aion, and the Villa of Theseus. All were made of small cubes of marble and stone, called tesserae, with glass paste added to widen the range of colour. In the House of Dionysus, for example, 5,985 square feet (556 sq metres) of floor space in 14 rooms are covered with the gorgeous mosaics.
Tombs of the Kings
There are actually no kings buried here. Rather the site known as the Tombs of the Kings, one mile (2km) northwest of Paphos harbour towards Coral Bay, was the final resting place of about 100 Ptolemaic aristocrats who lived and died in the city between 3 BC and 3 AD. The tombs are impressive, carved out of solid rock, some featuring Doric pillars and frescoed walls. Archaeological excavations are ongoing at the site, which also features a church known as Paleoekklisia, which sports traces of Byzantine frescoes.
Kato Paphos
This is the main tourist area of Paphos where you will find a magnificent array of restaurants, bars, shops and entertainment. The harbour area is a bustling, lively place by day or night and is the perfect venue to sit down, enjoy a drink or a meal and watch the world go by.

Guestbook for Villa Phoenix
Villa Phoenix is a lovely place by Maliha King, Berkshire UK on September 9, 2011
Villa Phoenix is a lovely place for relaxing! The villa is well equipped it was a home from home. We had to work whilst on holiday, and although there wasn't an internet modem in the property, Jan kindly arranged to have this installed for our arrival! Susan who was our contact whilst we were there, helped with directions to get to certain places, which was great as we didn't know our way around. I would recommend hiring a car as supermarkets, restaurants and other places to visit are not within walking distance. The car hire company run by Savvas is great, Savvas met us at the airport with the car and also escorted us to our villa, the price was very reasonable too! For places to each we loved the Liniaki's restaurant down in Pissouri Bay, food and service was fantastic! Coral Bay beach was great too, fantastic beach and not over crowded. It's a 40 minute drive from the villa but well worth the drive.
Overall fantastic holiday (although we had to work), if visiting Cyprus again I would definitely contact Cyprus Villa Rental! The Kings
Truly memorable holiday at Villa Phoenix by Tracy & Chris, Bedfordshire, England on August 29, 2011
We had a fabulous holiday at Villa Phoenix in August 2011! The villa was perfectly described by Jan on her website but indeed the photos do not do it full justice. The villa is spacious, modern, very clean, homely and user friendly! There was nothing lacking that we could have wanted - even beach and bathroom towels were provided! The children loved the spacious pool which was cleaned frequently during our 2 week stay - it was fab being able to sit and watch the children playing in the pool whilst relaxing on comfortable and luxurious outside furniture and enjoy the sun sinking over the sea. The Villa is in a superb location - just 10 minutes from the airport but just off the coastal road and within 10 minutes of Pathos and Pissouri.
We also used Jan's recommendation to book a car - we were met at the hotel with the car and then escorted to our villa - a lovely touch when we were already tired from travelling! Jan's help before and during our holiday was invaluable. No question was too small, and all were answered quickly and thoroughly. All the information provided regarding days out, restaurants, excursions, beaches and shops was invaluable. The directions to each were accurate and prevented any stress! It was lovely to receive the welcome pack on our arrival to the villa - milk, bread, cheese, eggs and champagne provided a fab first meal!
When we had a medical emergency during our holiday, Jan's help was speedy and essential. Her private doctor saw us immediately after providing initial telephone advice and reassured us immediately. Medicines were dispensed and we could continue our holiday without worry. We would thoroughly recommend Villa Phoenix as a fab holiday base - I would book again through Jan tomorrow as her personal touch cannot be beaten!
Amazing time at Villa Pheonix by Sarah, Berkshire on October 21, 2010
We had an amazing time, thank you. The villa was perfect for us and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Please pass on our thanks to Susan who was on hand immediately with answers over the washing machine and to replace the empty BBQ gas bottle. The villa itself was fabulously equipped – better than expected – and had everything we needed. We even made friends with a local cat (we named her Phoenix) so I hope she is not still hanging around waiting to us to come back with more tins of tuna!! Thank you also for all the local information and restaurant advice. To be honest we spent most evenings barbequing so did not make the most of the local cuisine – maybe an excuse to come back! If we do, we will certainly be in touch since the villa was great and ideally situated for facilities and sights. Thanks again.
5 Star Phoenix by Waldo, Brigg, Lincolnshire on October 12, 2010
The villa certainly lived up to our expectations and more, with everything required for a very comfortable stay. The outdoor area (where we spent most of our time) was ideal both during the day & evening time. With the pool a welcome reprieve from the heat of the day and the BBQ and eating area ideal in the evenings while watching the spectacular sunsets.
As we were only there for a week, using the information on Jan's website re places to visit, to eat and even hiring a car helped us maximise our time.
A visit to the village of Pissouri is very worthwhile (9km) with a Cypriot night on a Wed for entertainment in the village square. There are also a number of restaurants there, with the Bunch of Grapes and The Hidaway our 2 favourites.
We throughly enjoyed our stay and think it would be difficult to surpass this villa, we will certainly be back.
