The Paphos region
Paphos has been inhabited since the Neolithic period. It was a centre of the cult of Aphrodite and of pre-Hellenic fertility deities. Aphrodite's legendary birthplace was on this island, where her temple was erected by the Myceneans in the 12th century B.C. The remains of villas, palaces, theatres, fortresses and tombs mean that the site is of exceptional architectural and historic value. The mosaics of Nea Paphos are among the most beautiful in the world.
Paphos has always been one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, catering to all types of visitor the sightseer, the party seeker, the island hopper or the outdoor sports lover. The diversity of the island's scenery , the hospitality of the locals, the stunning beaches, the tranquillity during the daytime and the pulse of the night life, the delicious tastes of the local Greek cuisine and the general atmosphere of the area will undoubtedly cast a spell on you and make you love Paphos once and for all.
Paphos Harbour and Castle
The harbour at Paphos attracts visitors all year round, who take the opportunity to walk along the quay and maybe visit one of the fish restaurants, tavernas or cafes. The view is superb, with lots of colourful fishing boats bobbing in the harbour. The castle is in fact all that remains of a much earlier castle dating from 1391, which was demolished by the Venetians. The Ottomans used it as dungeons and the British as a warehouse for salt! It can be reached via a small bridge over a moat and is worth a visit for the view from the top. Opening hours - winter daily 9am to 5pm - summer daily 9am to 6pm - tel 26932841 (Paphos Tourism Office).
The Paphos harbour is lined with tourist shops, selling handicrafts, jewelry and other souvenirs. There are also roadside cafes and on the street visitors can meet up with Kókos, the resident pelican. The harbour is still used by small fishing boats. There are also various boat trips out to Lara's beaches as well as to a nearby shipwreck in a glass-bottomed boat.
The harbour is also a good place to take a boat tour of the surrounding beaches and coastline.
The very name Cyprus, it has been said, shimmers with an ages-old mystique. Today, history and hedonism are comfortably intertwined on the island. Ravishing five-star resorts within walking distance of well-preserved Greek and Roman ruins offer every amenity the modern traveller has come to expect and more to state of the art Thalassotherapy health spas.
Venture away from the sybaritic shore - if you can bring yourself to - and succumb to the slow, seductive rhythms of the interior. There are old wine-producing villages with atmospheric winding streets and terraced vineyards. Explore Greek Orthodox churches nestled in the hills whose walls conceal vibrantly painted Byzantine frescoes.
Love Goddesses and Sacred Mountains
Along the route that leads from Secret Valley to Limassol, the roadway opens up to reveal a magnificent stretch of coastline where chalky white cliffs stand watch over a dazzling aquamarine sea. Here sun worshippers make detours for a picnic and a swim at Petra tou Romiou, a boulder that marks the spot where Aphrodite emerged from the sea foam in ancient times. In the Akamas region, hikers exploring the area's rich flora can cool off at the grotto where the love goddess bathed after her amorous interludes.
Throughout Cyprus, the typically Mediterranean landscape is still blessed with the timeless beauty of antiquity. There are crusader fortresses framed by tall cypress trees, Greco-Roman theatres carved out of cliffs and Byzantine monasteries perched improbably on mountaintops. Sophisticated cities successfully balance the ancient and modern.
Archaeologists report that the site of Paphos has been inhabited since the Neolithic period. It was a centre of the cult of Aphrodite and of pre-Hellenic fertility deities. Aphrodite's legendary birthplace was on this island, where her temple was erected by the Myceneans in the twelfth century BC. The remains of villas, palaces, theatres, fortresses and tombs of the Classical, Hellenistic and Roman periods mean that the site is of exceptional architectural and historic value. The mosaics of Nea Paphos are among the most beautiful in the world.
Old Paphos, now the site of Kouklia a five minute drive from Secret Valley, was seated on an eminence, at the distance of about ten stadia from the sea, on which, however, it had a roadstead. It was not far distant from the promontory of Zephyrium and the mouth of the little river Bocarus
New Paphos (Nea Paphos), the currently inhabited town, was founded on the sea, near the western end of the island, and possessed a good harbour. It lay about 15 km northwest of the old city and Secret Valley.
The port of Kato PaphosToday Paphos, with a population of about 47.300, is a popular sea and a fast developing tourist resort, home to an attractive fishing harbour. It is divided into two major quarters: Ktima, on the sea terrace, is the main residential district, and Kato Pafos, by the sea, is built around the mediaeval port and contains most of the luxury hotels and the entertainment infrastructure of the city. The harbours of Paphos are not so important: the normal shipping goes via the harbour of Limassol. Just as is the marina of Paphos for fishing and other kinds of interest.
The Castle of PaphosAt the harbour, there is the Castle of Paphos, originally built as a Byzantine fort to protect the harbour and rebuilt by the Lusignans in the thirteenth century, then dismantled in 1570 by the Venetians, who found themselves unable to defend it against the Ottomans, who in their turn restored and strengthened it after they captured the island. Saranta Kolones, Kato Paphos, near the harbour, is a castle built in the first years of the rule of the Lusignans (beginning of the twelfth century) maybe on the site of a previous Byzantine Castle. It was destroyed in the earthquake of 1222.
Erin Villa offers you everything you could wish for in your Cyrus holiday experience.

"Beautiful, well equipped villa"
I stayed at Erin Villa with a group of friends for a long weekend (would have loved to have stayed longer!) The villa had everything we needed, including 3 toilets/bathrooms to avoid the queues that would inevitably have happened with 5 females! The location was very quiet and peaceful, but allowed easy access to Paphos and other local attractions.
Thank you for your comments & glad to hear you had a great time.
We hope to welcome you back to Erin Villa again soon & would like to point out that we offer discount to returning guests.

"Great villa with all amenities in a peaceful location"
Ideal villa in a quiet location with all the amenities necessary for a family orientated holiday. Villa clean and well maintained with a decent sized pool and extensive outside entertainment/dining area. A car is an absolute necessity to access the Secret Valley as there are, as yet, no restaurants or shops in the resort. If dining out Gabrial's Tavern in Kouklia is well recommended for friendly service and very good food at a reasonable price. Owners and their local representative were easy to deal with and only too happy offer advice and assistance if required.
Thank you for your comments. There is so much to see on the island a car is a good idea to travel round.
There is now a very reasonably priced bus service which goes from the roundabout in Secret Valley into Paphos Harbour. He starts at Petra tou Romiou (Aphrodites' Rock which is just up the coast in the opposite direction to Paphos).
Hope we will be welcoming you back to Erin Villa again soon. Just incase you were not aware - we offer discount to returning guests. x

"A bit disapointed with this villa"
We stay in villas in Cyprus every summer and every year we choose some place new to stay in. This year we were a bit disappointed with Erin Villa because in all the years we have been renting villas we have never stayed somewhere where the A/C turns itself off after 2 hours. Erin Villa has timers on all the A/C units and the amounts of time you can have them on for are either half an hour, an hour or two hours. This was a big problem during the night since we kept waking up because of the heat after they turned off and we had to turn them on again. One night we must have woke up about 4 times.
Another issue we had was that there was no shade outside in the pool area and the 2 umbrellas the house had were not enough for all 6 of us. This might not be much of a problem when you want to sunbathe all day in moderate weather but when it's over 40 degrees out and you want a bit of shade it is.
I must say that the house was spotlessly clean though with all equipment someone would require during their stay and the beds were very comfortable. We all just think that the above 2 issues are important for us so we won't be staying here again.
Thank you for your feedback, it is very much appreciated.
With regard to the air conditioning the reason we had to put in timers was due to guests going out all day & leaving the air con on. As you can imagine this was a great expense but we are now looking into a longer time setting which can then be used during the night.
We have bought 2 larger parasols for the veranda. As you pointed out it does get very hot mid day & shade is essential.
Thank you once again for your feedback. This is very important to us as we want every guest to have an enjoyable & memorable holiday in Erin Villa. We look forward to guests returning time & time again.

"Large well maintained villa"
The villa is situated in Secret Valley which is about 10 minutes drive from Paphos airport and about 20 minutes drive from Paphos harbour. Despite being so close to the airport we were not disturbed by the noise of planes. Anyway Paphos airport is no Heathrow.
Secret Valley itself looks like it will be one day a very large development of high class villas, some would be at home in Hollywood, although there is little development going on there at present. Erin Villa is on a road which has been largely developed and so you are unlikely to be disturbed by further building work.
There are no facilities in Secret Valley itself but a development 5 minutes drive down the road has a small supermarket and several restaurants. In the local town of Pissouri, about 10 minutes drive there is a larger supermarket and more restaurants.
The villa is a large three bedroom villa with good sized bedrooms, well maintained and nicely decorated. There are air conditioning units downstairs and in all the bedrooms. These units are on timers which allow then to be run for 2 hours after which they switch off. You then need to switch then on again. This is common in all the villas we have stayed in although occasionally some villas allow the air conditioning units to be used without timers in the bedrooms. Air condition units in general can be quite noisy so there are pros and cons to both.
The pool seemed slightly larger than at some other villas. Some pools have a very shallow end where you have steps into the pool others like Erin Villa use traditional ladders to get into the pool. I suppose the former is better for younger children. The pool is adjacent to a residential road which leads further into the development, it is not a busy road, and I would guess traffic passes every few minutes.
Thank you for your comments. x

"Wonderful Villa with great facilities and easy access to Paphos town & airport."
It is a lovely, very well appointed modern villa with all necessary equipment and facilities for a great holiday. Located about 20km from Paphos it provides peace and tranquillity yet easy access to the airport and the beautiful south coast of the island.
There are still some new villas being built close by and so it was at times quite noisy and the road was busy with building supplies etc, but clearly that will only be a temporary issue.
Our two sons (and partners) were with us and it was perfect accommodation for six adults.
We were only able to stay a week and it certainly wasn't long enough.
It is a lovely house and is thoroughly recommended to everyone.
Thank you for your comments.
I think all the building is complete now. They builders don't usually work during the hottest time ie Aug as it is just too hot for them.
Hope to see you back at Erin Villa again. x

"An exceptional family friendly holiday villa in an exquisite location"
A beautiful Villa which was absolutely ideal for our kids. They spent hours in the pool which was quite safe and easily supervised by adults. Definitely need a hire car for this holiday to get to shops restuarants etc. Really enjoyed our stay in this beautiful location. Owners, Eileen & Brian, couldnt have been more helpful with organising flights, car hire, and ensuring everything was perfect for us. Highly recommended.

"sheer heaven on earth"
I would rate this villa five star. The location is very good with access to very pretty local villages where you can sample the local cusine, or go into town, if you choose. What really makes Erin Villa in my opinion, are the stunning views from every angle. This, and the way it has been very tastefully decorated and the friendly, mannerly way we were looked after makes this my home from home - but with the sunshine!!
