The Paphos region
Kolossi castle, once base for the crusaders, towers over the vineyards of Kolossi village and not far away is the ancient stadium, where you can sit and imagine the screaming chariot races.
All these sites are within 30 mins. of our Cyprus Villa.
The Troodos area, very accessible from the villa, has a wealth of small villages where vineyards, cherry orchards and goats provide a major income for the area as well as the notorious villages of Omodos and Platres visited by many tourists.
Omodos is the centre of the wine industry where you can see the grapes being brought into the cooperative from the surrounding villages. The cobbled main street lined with mulberry trees leads to the monastery.
A number of cafes and simple restaurants alternate with souvenir shops, the best buys being the local wines and hand made lace.
Platres is higher in the Troodos, stays cool and green most of the summer and was popularised in the early 1900’s when the wealthy built summer residences. Above Platres is a walk to the Caledonian Falls and a trout farm where one can eat the local fish BBQ'd.
Prodromos is the highest village in Cyprus and Pedoulas is at the top of the Marathassa valley, laid out in tiers and has a view of the north coast on a clear day.
The frescoed churches of the Troodos are renowned; the most important are Asimou, Ayios loannis, Lambadhistis, Ayios Nikolas tis Steyis, Panayia tou Araka and Stavros tou Ayiasmati. Often they are kept locked and hunting down the key is all part of the visit. The caretakers name and contact is usually on the door.
It is well worth planning a route taking in some of the villages, stopping at a local Winery for a tasting, the potteries or to take in the dramatic views.
Secret Valley Resort
Cyprus is steeped in 5000 years of history, it has many fine archaeological sites including at least 3 amphi theatres where theatrical performances and concerts take place during the summer.
In Paphos a 13th century castle guards the harbour entrance and some of the most impressive mosaics in the world are found on the headland beyond the harbour, they are amazingly well preserved.
The site of the tombs of the kings is well worth a visit as is the site of the Byzantine church where St. Paul was tortured while chained to a pillar, although only ruins remain a delightful Anglican church is adjacent where anyone is welcome to visit and join in a service.
Walking is a pleasant way to spend time in Cyprus especially in the spring and autumn.
Coastal walking is very scenic near to the villa and the Troodos has several marked trails encompassing rivers, forestry and ravines.
The Akamas peninsular also has trails starting from Aphrodites Baths west of Latchi and Polis and of course it is interesting merely to wander around the villages.
There are currently 3 golf courses in the region:
2 mins. from villa Delphia, which is an 18 hole championship course playing to par 71 and measuring 5989 metres. It is a relaxing scenic course amidst mature trees and very attractive planting and set against a natural backdrop of dramatic rock formation. The course was opened in 1996 and sports a very stylish clubhouse and restaurant from where you can survey the beautiful grounds and lake, listen to the frogs and watch the eagles soar overhead. Peak rate green fees are about £30 (mid sept. to mid may). Clubs, trolleys, and buggies and are available for hire. There is a driving range and practice areas and lessons can be arranged.
5 mins. from Villa Delphia, another 18 hole course of 6200 metres par72. This very challenging course opened in 2002 and comprises of 2 plateaus separated by a steep ravine and makes the most of the spectacular terrain bearing olives and carob trees and views of the sea. The clubhouse is a high standard offering an extensive menu. Peak rate green fees are about £60 including a shared buggy.
About 20 mins. from Villa Delphia, nestles in the foothills of the Troodos Mountains 500 metres above sea level, so cooler in the summer. Again a challenging 18 hole course laid out in 2 loops of 9 holes blending beautifully with the natural environment of fruit trees, vines and streams, 6000 metres in length and par71. It has a clubhouse and restaurant with green fees similar to Secret Valley. It is advisable to book well in advance

There is a mini market in the village of Kouklia just 5 mins. away from the villa which sells all basic needs. Paphos has several large supermarkets with fish and olive counters as well as a small market, there will be details in the villa.
The best buys in Cyprus are probably leather, silver and gold. Jewellers abound in Paphos and Limasol, and there are some very nice leather shops not to mention the shoes!
There are a variety of restaurants and tavernas in the area. The nearest is just a 2 min. drive from Villa Delphia down the hill to the Secret Valley golf clubhouse.
You do not have to be a member to use the facilities. It is stylish, is in a beautiful setting overlooking the lake and a very pleasant venue for lunch, mid morning coffee or an aperitif.
