BookThe Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Deux Sevres region
Poitou-Charentes is a tranquil and largely unspoilt region halfway down the western coast of France. Its long Atlantic coastline has fine sandy beaches, pretty marinas and bustling resorts. The gastronomy and wine of the region (amongst which the famous Cognac) are quite renowned internationally.
The Poitou-Charentes region, located in the south west of France is renowned for having one of the most pleasant climates in France along with the French Riviera. Winters are really mild and thanks to the oceanic climate, summers are hot but not muggy!
The Secondigny area
The town of Secondigny, which lies in western France in the beautiful countryside of the Deux-Sèvres, is a pretty town with a peaceful way of life. It lies between the Secondigny Forest, an area of beautiful woodland trails and nature reserves, and the Gatines, known for their rolling meadows and apple orchards. The town is fortunate in its natural surroundings, and proves popular with property seekers who desire a tranquil, rural lifestyle Despite its peaceful, rural ambience, Secondigny has all the amenities you may require for a good standard of living, without having to stray too far from home.
Renowned for its surrounding apple orchards, Secondigny is a rural town and home to the Reinette Clochard apple (also known as the Reinette de Parthenay). There is a 14km orchard trail at Le Bois de l'Aumonerie, with a number of separate themed trails mapped out and educational notice boards. The forests at Secondigny and Mosnerie also provide defined walking paths. The Les Effres Lake offers a number of activities such as mini-golf, fishing, pedalos, a swimming pool, boules pitch and picnic area, and there are tennis courts nearby. This is also where the municipal camping site is situated. Nearby at Mazieres (14km) is an 18 hole golf course, and at Moutieres sous Chantemerle (21km) there is a go-karting track. Secondigny is the source of both the Thouet and the Sevre Nantaise rivers
There is a sizeable and well stocked supermarket, a plethora of small shops, including bakers, hairdressers, newsagents and other necessities, banks. Secondary also has a good selection of restaurants, with the quality of food being every bit as high as you would expect from a French town!

On arrival we were welcomed with milk, bread, preserves and a lovely bottle of wine, which was gratefully received after the drive from Calais. Also, the owners had put a comprehensive visitors folder together to make sure we had all the information required to help us get the best out of the area and attractions. The gite was extremely clean and is very spacious inside with 2 good size bedrooms both with an ensuite, the kids loved having their own bathroom!! There is a lovely combined living & kitchen area, with all the mod cons you need for a self-catering holiday........having a dishwasher and washing machine was a real bonus. The gite is located next to the owners beautiful manor house, lake and swimming pool. We spent most evenings cooking on the outside BBQ and enjoying a glass of wine whilst overlooking the fish and wildlife at the lake. The swimming pool is located in the grounds of the house, and is where we spent most of the sunny days, and being a salt water pool meant the children could spend hours splashing around without getting sore eyes. The gite is surrounded by beautiful countryside and is only a 5 minute drive away from the nearest town of La Chapelle, which has a supermarket and a lovely boulangerie for fresh bread and croissants. The area provides many attractions for all ages, from quiet medieval villages to larger towns, all within an hours drive. There were so many places to visit, but not enough days, so will be definitely booking again for next year. We would highly recommend this gite for families and people wishing to get away from it all and can't wait to return. Response: Thank you for your kind comments and you will be pleased to know that we have replaced the TV with a larger flat screen version complete with English free view TV.We are glad you liked the salt water pool, it is a system that gives crystal clear swimming without using harmful chemicals so a much more pleasant experiance and eco friendly. We look forward to seeing you all again next year. |
