Wasdale is a 15 minute drive away with Wastwater Lake (England's deepest lake), Scafell Pike (England's highest mountain), St Olaf's Church (England's smallest church) and the venue of England's biggest liar (held at Santon Bridge Inn).
Eskdale is another lovely valley, only 15 minutes drive away, with hundreds of low-level as well as mountain walks. It also houses a terminus for the Ravenglass and Eskdale Steam Railway - a popular train that travels seven scenic miles to the coastal village of Ravenglass.

Muncaster Castle is worth a visit with its gardens and its owl centre. Sellafield Visitors Centre is not too far away Wastwater is a quiet lake to visit - lovely on a moonlit night. The Ravenglass and Eskdale Steam Railway is a favourite with kids and adults alike. Eskdale is a beautiful valley - visit Stanley Ghyll waterfall if you go there. Scafell Pike is a must if you have the energy for it.
