The Northern England / Yorkshire / Northumberland region
Northumberland is renowned for being one of the most beautiful counties in England, with very little to spoil the natural landscape. It is also very rich in history with more castles than any other county and links with the beginnings of Christianity on nearby Holy Island.
The one hundred of miles of untouched coastline is a designated Area of Outstanding Beauty and is therefore a popular destination for those who want to find some peace and quiet. Birdwatchers and nature lovers can't help but fall in love with the region, abundant with rare birds, red squirrels and wild deer.
Seahouses area
At Seahouses you are literally surrounded by stunning scenery and spoilt for choice for things to do and places to visit. Within a short walk of the cottage are the many attractions of Seahouses itself. The harbour is just around the corner and there are many pubs, shops and restaurants to choose from along Main Street.
The Farne Islands can be reached by regular boat trips from Seahouses harbour. Great for bird lovers and geologists. The beaches also offer fantastic horse riding opportunities for those who ride.
The historic town of Alnwick is only 10 miles away where you will find a thriving, historic market town with something a bit special! Even if you are not green fingered, a visit to Alnwick Gardens is a must, where you can stroll around the stunning gardens and waterfalls. Harry Potter fans of all ages should visit Alnwick Castle (or Hogwart’s School) and relive some of the favourite scenes from the popular films.
The Heritage coastline is dotted with castles and villages and stunning beaches – ideal for walking all year round. The Cheviot Hills are only a short drive away offering superb views across to Holy Island and Lindisfarne. Alternatively, a stroll along the coast to Bamburgh Castle (only 1 mile away) or a visit to Holy Island are both ideal for a family day out.
How to get there
From Newcastle International Airport, Seahouses is about an hour and a half drive. Alnmouth is the nearest train station, and is on the East Coast mainline from London Kings Cross to Edinburgh. If driving from the south, continue past Newcastle and Morpeth on the A1 (M), following signs for Alnwick. Take second exit for Alnwick (Alnwick Gardens), and follow signs for Seahouses (13 miles). The cottage is located at the end of Union Street which is a right turn just as you reach the harbour down North Street.
