The Northumberland region
Situated on the North Northumberland coast, in an area of outstanding natural beauty, Kittiwake is the ideal base from which to explore the Scottish borders and the hills and coastline of this magnificent part of England. History abounds at every turn; more castles than anywhere else in England, the haunting atmosphere of Holy Island - the birthplace of Christianity, and magnificent Hadrian's Wall to name but a few. With miles of unspoilt sandy beaches to explore, and the glorious countryside and rugged beauty of the Northumberland National Park to walk, you will be spoilt for choice for daily activities.
Within a 20 mile radius, there are a wealth of fabulous places to visit:-
Bamburgh - with it's imposing castle dominating the village and a new museum dedicated to local hero, Grace Darling.
Alnwick - an ancient market town with another impressive castle(a must for Harry Potter fans!) and the spectacular Alnwick gardens. Browse the large selection of publications in Barter Books, one of the largest secondhand bookshops in Britain.
Holy Island/Lindisfarne - the home of Christianity in the North of England, accessed via a causeway at low tide and boasting a castle and ruined priory - take home some Lindisfarne mead.
Craster - home of the world famous Craster kippers and the ideal starting point for the leisurely coastal walk to the ruins of Dunstanburgh castle.
Berwick - the most northerly town in England. Walk the city walls, visit the Barracks museum or follow the Lowry trail.
For those wanting a taste of city life, Edinburgh & Newcastle are within easy reach by car or train and offer a wide range of shops, eateries and nightlife.
From Kittiwake's front door, it is only 150 yards to the many amenities Seahouses has to offer:- the local harbour - flanked on either side by glorious, uncrowded sandy beaches, shops, cafes/restaurants, public houses and crazy golf. Departing regularly from Seahouses harbour are fishing trips and boat trips to the Farne Islands; famous for its bird sanctuaries, seal colonies and the Longstone lighthouse. There are several first class golf courses in the area, with Seahouses 18 hole golf course being a 5-minute walk from the cottage.
As well as convenience stores, a bakery, a butchers, a chemist, gift shops and a petrol station, Seahouses also has its own Tourist Information centre for helpful advice and local information. There are a range of cafes, restaurants and public houses to eat in, alternatively there are both Indian and Chinese takeaways.
Sample the delicious fish and chips, enjoy a pint of local ale in the historic Olde Ship Inn, search the rockpools and picnic on the beaches, or try your luck in the penny arcade - Seahouses has plenty to offer everyone, young or old!
