Southern Israel/Negev region

The Negev is a large stretch of arid/semi arid desert land that makes up more than 50% of Israel's land territory. The name "Negev" has it's origins in the Bible and means; dry or water less. Thus, Negev stands for land with out water.

Although, when one thinks of a desert, one immediately pictures stretches of sand dunes (like the Sahara), the Negev's land scape is very different. Rocks, hills, mounts, valleys, cliffs, canyons, dry river beds, craters and other remarkable & rare geological phenomenons, all these make the Negev particularly and specially beautiful.

A lot of history has also happened here and a long list of people, from Nomads to Israelis, have walked the paths of the Negev. Their signs, especially those of the Nabateans, are still to be found around.

Even today, the Negev is sparsely populated, this and the endless stretches of desert wilderness, makes the Negev a special spot to connect to nature and recharge and refill the spirit.

Sde Boker

Midreshet Ben Gurion is situated in-between Beer Sheba and Mizpe Ramon. It's a 45 minutes drive from Beer Sheba, 30 minutes from Mizpe Ramon and 20 minutes from Yeruham. It's immediate surrounding is made up of; the "Halukim hills" to it's west and north west; the national parks "Evdat" & "Ein Evdat" to it's south; national park "Gan ha Pesalim" to it's east; and to it's north lies "Sedot Zin" (the Zin Fields). On a larger scale, Midreshet Ben Gurion and it's immediate surroundings are almost entirely engulfed by Israel's 3rd largest nature reserve; the Zin Cliffs nature reserve.

It's geographical location and it's desert surrounding filled with nature reserves and national parks, makes Midreshet Ben Gurion a very convenient base for desert treks and hikes. Whether on foot, on bike or in jeep, be they hard or easy, the routes are all just as much enjoyable.

In addition to the many walking biking and jeep routes around Midreshet Ben Gurion, there are also other attractions in the vicinity, such as:

• Nebetian ruins and excavations: Ovdat, Mamshit & Shibta.

• Craters: Ramon crater at Mizpe Ramon & the Big and Small craters by Yeruham.

• Unique geological phenomenon: The carpentry – worth a visit.

• Desert springs and mineral baths.

• Pioneering settlements museums: Mizpe Revivim. Mizpe Gvulot, Mizpe Beit-Eshel.

• Ben Gurion's desert home

If all this is not enough, you can just lay back and relax in our comfortable, quiet & relaxing desert home. You are most likely to see some desert mountain goats (ibex) from the terraces of our home. They come around all the year long and it's a fascinating sight!

"Bliss"

Meidan has a beautiful home in the desert. We decided to stay here to break up our journey from Aqaba to Jerusalem - and what a fantastic place to do it.The apartment is spacious, incredibly clean an… More

Thanks you very much Matt for your warm words and frank opinion!
In reference to the problem you had finding us, here are some driving/walking directions for our future guests:
1. on reaching Midreshet Ben Gurion (accessible from HW 40), cross the traffic circle and go staright in through the yellow gate.
2. drive straight ahead (for about 300 meters) till you hit a T junction.
3. on the T junction turn right and then immediately left.
4. drive/walk straight ahead for about 400 meters then turn right into the Neve Zin Neighborhood. Note: This turn in to the neighborhood is a BRICK paved road just where the neighborhood begins! (before reaching this point, there's approximately a 100 meters of building/plantation free stretch on the right side of the road)
5.after entering the neighborhood, drive/walk till you hit the end of the road and land up in a parking ground. our place is on the left hand corner of the parking lot, under the big tree.
It was a pleasure hosting you (even though you'r stay was rather short).

"Great appartment and warm hospitality in the desert"

The apartment is big, clean, well furnished and very hospitable. It has everything you need (kitchen, tv etc) and two large terraces overlooking the Midrasha. For me it was perfect. I especially enjoyed waking up in the morning, walking 50 meters out the door to the end of the Midrasha to watch the desert, with an outstanding panoramic view over the Zin valley and a herd of ibexes always there. The Midrasha is well situated for visiting the Negev, the Akev Oasis, Mizpe Ramon and the Ramon Creator, Beduin hospitality in the area, and to enjoy the desert's special atmosphere.

Thanks! Please do come back when ever you have the opportunity...
