The Sicily region
Sicily is an autonomous region of Italy with just over five million inhabitants. It is also the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. In addition, several much smaller islands surrounding it are also considered to be part of Sicily. Throughout much of its history Sicily has been considered a crucial strategic location due in large part to its importance for Mediterranean trade routes. The area was highly regarded as part of Magna Graecia, with Cicero describing Siracusa as the greatest and most beautiful city of all Ancient Greece.
Sicily is rich in culture, especially with regard to the arts, cuisine, architecture and language. The Sicilian countryside is dotted with orange and lemon orchards, and the natural beauty of the region impresses tourists year after year. Sicily also holds importance for archaeological and ancient sites such as the Necropolis of Pantalica and the Valley of the Temples.
Sciacca area
Sciacca is a town in the province of Agrigento on the southwestern coast of Sicily. It has noteworthy views of the Mediterranean Sea.
Sciacca Thermae was founded in the 5th century BCE by the Greeks, as its name imports, as a thermal spa for Selinunte, whose citizens came there to bathe in the sulphurous springs of Mt. Cronio, which rises up behind the town. We have no account of the existence of a town on the site during the period of the independence of Selinunte, though there is little doubt that the thermal waters would always have attracted some population to the spot. Nor even under the Romans did the place attain to anything like the same importance with the northern Thermae; and there is little doubt that Pliny is mistaken in assigning the rank of a colonia to the southern instead of the northern town of the name. Strabo mentions the waters (τὰ ὕδατα τὰ Σελινούντια, Strab. vi. p. 275); and they are again noticed in the Itineraries under the name of Aquae Labodes or Labrodes (Itin. Ant. p. 89; Tab. Peut.)
Sciacca itself owes its origins to the Saracens, who settled there in the 9th century. Although the origins of the town's name have been much debated, it is thought to have come from the Arabic word "xacca" (شاقة), meaning "water". The Saracens built the original walls and laid out the street grid, which was later expanded by the Normans. Throughout much of the Middle Ages, the town was at the centre of a bloody feud between rival baronial families and, it was the citizenry that bore the brunt of the fighting; in less than 100 years over half the population was killed by one side or the other.
Sciacca events: The Carnival of Sciacca. - The Feast of the Shrine of St. Calogero (Tuesday after Pentecost) - the Festival of the Sea with the procession of the statue of St. Peter (June 29) - Saccense the summer with musical theater and folk art varies (between June and September) - the Festival agriculture with tastings of typical products and events (September) - The Saccense August with the procession of Our Lady of emergency (15 August). On the same day will also organize musical events and sports tourism.

Guestbook for Casette del porto di Sciacca
English Family (2 adult) May '09 We were very satisfied with the service of the host and the apartment. Because it is based beside the harbour it may not suit everyone but for us it was very good.
Family from Bristol (2adults 2 children) from 8th to 15th of April '09: We have enjoyed stay here very much in your lovely apartment in Sciacca and look forward to coming again! Thank you.
Le "casette" is a friendly, relaxed family run complex surrounded by the sea. It is located in the port of the town. I stayed there last March for a week. I was particularly pleased with the structure perfectly restored and the charming, relaxing atmosphere. Definetelly an Experience that must be repeated! John
Dear lords of houses of Porto, I stayed with you several times last summer. I love the sea can be seen from the window and the fabulous beach a few meters from the trap. Are never satisfied diving and sunbathing. And then in the the morning I like to buy fresh fish directly from the boats that have caught. I really liked you to stay especially for the sounds and smells of a typical sicilian port. This is Sicily! Thanks! Manuela
