The Lazio region

The region of Lazio, rich of culture and nature, is situated in the centre of Italy.

Hilly landscapes with olive- and vine cultivations and the lakes Bracciano and Bolzena characterizes the north of the region. The culturally heydays are the famous Etruscan excavation and the sulphur-wells, where you can spoil your skin under the open sky.

Rome is the culturally and economically center as well as the capital city of Italy, located directly in the heartland of Lazio.

Mountains are in the south, rising above 2000 meters; lower, heading the coast the gentle green slopes are overgrown with orange-and lemon trees and olive-and vine cultivations.

The coast is uneven, sandy beaches alternate rocky cliffs, suggestive little bays and hills are covered with Mediterranean spontaneous vegetation (macchia mediterranea).

Thousands of years of history signed the landscape, increasing the cultural value of this land: Excavations from the Roman and the pre-Roman time (Etruscan, Ausonia and Aurunci), medieval towns, monasteries and convents, make the stay in Lazio always an astonishing experience.

The region has many nature reserves and little protected oasis; very beautiful for short walks, hiking tours or trekking.

The Garigliano river natural park at the board with Campania offers multiple opportunities to come in contact with the lush river vegetation and the wild animals that inhabit along the banks.

Thermal springs are to find in the region of Viterbo, Tivoli and Fiuggi and in the south in Suio.

Located in the south of the region, The Pontine Islands join sensational nature, clear water, characteristic fisher towns and Roman culture. The main Island Ponza is also called pearl of the Tyrrhenian Sea.

The food and wine tradition might deserve its own chapter: fish and seafood on the coast; rustically cuisine in the countryside (meat and sausage, cheese and a lot of different vegetables), buffalo mozzarella, and olives of Gaeta are only some examples.

Lots of tasty and important wines are available for experts and curious tasters, thanks to the unique warm weather and the composition of the soil.

The area between south of Lazio and northern Campania, named Campania Felix by the ancient Roman, produces since centuries a particular wine, called Falernus, one of the many wine excellence of the area.

Scauri

Scauri is the biggest district of the local government of Minturno (8.000 inhabitants). Scauri is a seaside resort at the foot of the Aurunci Mountains (Petrella 1533m), surrounded by hills, overgrown with typical Mediterranean bushes, trees and plants.

About 4 km sandy beaches, surrounded by two green hills (the Golden and the Silver Mountain), invites for swimming, sunbathes, relaxation and walks. Here are lots of swimming areas (lidos) where you can hire sunshades, do sports like wind- or kite surfing, loan canoes and pedal boats or attend a sailing course. A very romantic place is the beach of Spiaggia dei Sassolini, a small bay for relaxation in a quiet place, away from the daily sounds of the town or you can visit an oasis from the WWF in the nature reserve Riviera di Ulisse. The nature reserve invites for walks and you can explore around the ruins of the old Roman Villa Mamurra (1 century BC).

You can admire the ruins of the antique Roman Minturnae and the amphitheatre at the legendary Via Appia; there are to visit open-air-events like concerts, theatre or dance-performance in summer.

Ruins of the antique Scauri (then Pirae; the time of the Aurunci nation) you can find in the old centre of the town, close to the swimming area Lido die Pini; one piece of the megalithic city wall is in a very good condition today.

A great variety of restaurants you can find in Scauri and vicinity: from the simple pizzeria over genuine restaurants with a good local cooking to gourmet restaurants and pubs. Live-music is often given at the Maryen place, at the Scolio or in the pub Mary Rock. The Mary Rock is an open-air-pub, situated in a very romantically bay directly at the sea, open only in the summer months.

Scauri is an optimal starting point for daily trips to Rome, Naples, Pompeii and Caserta, the islands, the mountains, the archaeological excavations, monasteries, converts and thermal springs.

"The place to be for a family with teenagers"

We stayed two weeks in the appartamento Arancia, which is completely refurbished and located on the ground floor. The appartment is well equiped with confortable beds, airco, a terrace (with BBQ) etc. The property has good parking facilities and is well protected by an automated gate. The owners live in the building and are very helpfull and hospitable, they really cared about us, gave us good advise and helped us out when we had difficulties. We had 4 bycicles at our disposal. The property is only 10 minutes walking to a lovely, crowed beach. There is also a railway station nearby from which we did great trips to Rome and Pompei. It costs only EUR 10,90 pp to travel to Rome and the tickets include the use of the metropolitan and the busses. The sand beach is very attractive and clean. There is also a reasonably priced surfing and sailing school. Scauri is a very busy place until late in the evening but the appartment is located in a quit area. We also enjoyed the restaurants were we had very good food for a good price/quality ratio. We were very pleased with the recommendations for shopping and food given by the owners, they send us to the right places and in many cases we were offered a discount. If you like a holiday with great beaches and possibilities to see some cultural attractions and all this in 30 °C, the appartamento arancio is the place to be. The only negative point we could think of is that there are a lot of mosquitos in the garden (not in the house), so if they like you and you wish to sit there, take something to protect yourself.
