The Flower in Hand
About the home
'The Flower in Hand' is over 200 year's old and steeped in history. It was once a public house which was popular with local seafarers and renowned for its commanding position looking out to sea. Later, it was converted to a prestigious private residence for one of Scarborough's oldest sea fishing families.
Today, after extensive refurbishment, you will find that his large property offers a wealth of features and a welcome feeling of space, combined with every modern day facility you may need. The interior has been carefully modernised to provide luxury accommodation which can be enjoyed by families or large groups of friends. The unique position provides panoramic sea views from every room in the house and there are two private terraces which are ideal for relaxing in the sun, enjoying a quiet drink or al fresco dining.
The harbour, promenade and beach are literally just a few minutes walk away. There's also many restaurants, shops and leisure facilities nearby. So, you'll soon find that there is so much you can do!

The information for this property states "Facilities... Access: Parking space". This implied to me that the property has a single parking space of it's own. This is very misleading. You are issued with day passes for any "A2" parking area, which pretty well covers the whole old-town Scarborough peninsula. Competition for the four such bays outside the property is intense, as these bays are the nearest parking for all 14 properties on Burr Bank. The neighbour does not like you parking right outside the Flower in Hand itself, stating that it blocks access to his house, but does nothing when other people from Burr Bank do so. To be clear, parking is a chronic problem in this part of Scarborough, and you cannot enjoy a stay in this part of town without facing it. Do not expect to drive off on a day trip, and assume you can park outside the property when you get back. The location of the property is superb, with Scarborough beaches, harbour and fun-fair a very short walk from the house. Scarborough town centre, railway station, the Stephen Joseph theatre and many restaurants are a 10-15 minute walk away. Surprisingly the beachfront and funfair noise does not reach the house at all. The views over the harbour and South bay are excellent, and the owners have thoughtfully provided a telescope to look at them with. There are a couple of awkward steps that can surprise the elderly, and some low ceilings & beams on the top floor. The landlady was very swift at dealing with minor issues with no problem, and the house was clean and fitted out to a high standard. The landlady was able to reserve one of the 4 parking spots for us by the expedient of leaving her car there until we arrived. In short, organise Tesco.com (or similar) to deliver your groceries and use this property to enjoy Scarborough on foot. |
