The Southern Italy / Calabria region
Scalea is a picturesque town situated in Calabria in southern Italy, on the sunny Tyrrhenian coast, surrounded by bright blue warm sea and lush high mountains. Around every corner is a new panoramic view. Scalea is one of the most visited resorts in Italy. The climate here is amongst the best in the Mediterranean with long soft hot summers and very short mild winters. Scalea is on the Cedar Riviera natural green and full of beautiful bright flowers, plants and exotic trees. The name of Scalea is also synonymous of culture, history and folklore. During the time Scalea became an important fief and a centre of study, which was gradually enriched with monuments and works of art, most of which can still be admired today. Well worth a visit are the famous Old Town with attractive stairway that begins in piazza De Palma: it is a natural amphitheatrethe,13th century Palazzo of the Spinelli Princes (XIII century), the Norman Castle, the Palazzo Palamolla, of Renaissance inspiration and the Torre Cimalonga, Aragonese style building, now the seat of the "Antiquarium"

If you are interested in the 'Real' Italy, then this region is for you because you will see real culture and Italian life, enjoy cheap but delicious Italian food and wine. Italians have been having great holidays here for decades , but Scalea has remained unknown to the rest of the world. Yet this town has everything going for it. The people here are very helpful and down to earth. Population in Scalea grows tenfold in the summer months as the Italian holiday season begins, so between July and the start of September it is very busy here, with parties, disco's, markets, local festivals etc. Scalea is well serviced by many restaurants, supermarkets, clothes shops and has entertainment during its summer feria from July to September... Outside of these months the town still stays relatively busy and most of the shops and restaurants stay open, which allows for some relaxing holidays as well.

Scuba Diving at DinoSub - Praia a mare ,The Isle of Dino -a marine sanctuary. Bay of Polycastro. The dive centre is on the beach at Praia a mare (2 miles from Scalea) between the 15th of June and the 15 of September. However they also operate from their office between the 15th of may and the 30th of September. The office is inside the holiday village "LA MANTINERA" at Praia a mare.
Snorkelling - lots of interesting sites in Scalea and up the coas.
Canoeing and Water Rafting are very popular activities on the famous white waters of Fiume lao. Canoeing and Rafting Corner office located on Via Lauro and Via Sauro, 0985.21476 / 0985.91033.
Horse Riding centre is located 2 miles south of Scalea on the Strada for Verbicaro and Marcelluna. La Bruca Riding Centre. Information at the Hotel Talao. Also horse trekking in San Dominica Taloa.

Skiing in the Sila Mountains - About 1 and a half hours drive from Scalea are Calabria's main Ski resorts. These are in the Sila Grande which is near Cosenza (travel south on the SS18 from Scalea and follow signs for Cosenza. Then take the road into the mountains. The 3 resorts are:Camigliatello Silano 1400m , Lorica 1350-1920m , Ciricilla 1400-1500m.

*Fly to Lamezia, Naples, or Rome. Cheap flights available from Ryanair or Thomsonfly *Regular Bus services from Airports to the train stations Lamezia, Napoli Centrale, or Roma Termini. *Train to Scalea-S. Domenica Talao approximatly every hour ( www.trenitalia.com) *From Scalea train station 5 min walk to the apartment. *By Road ,Scalea is 1hr 30min from Lamezia and 3hr from Naples.
