The North West Italy region
Liguria and its Riviera di Ponente (the coast to the west of Genova) is one of Italy's best kept secrets, and Noli is one of the jewels of the Riviera di Ponente. A small beautifully preserved medieval town, twenty minutes from Savona, 40 minutes from Genova international airport and about an hour and a half from Nice.
The village is particularly enchanting off-season (October-May) when the summer crowds have left, a perfect place to relax and unwind. You can enjoy a quiet holiday with long walks on the empty beach and in the surrounding hills, as well as sailing and windsurfing at the local sailing club, the Lega Navale Italiana Club. Scuba diving is also available at the Hotel Capo Noli.
Wander through the narrow streets of the old part of the village discovering charming little restaurants and bars and enjoying the local shops and bottegas. The local cuisine is one of the attractions of Noli featuring pesto, many types of pasta, home produced focaccia and many and varied fish dishes including the delicious fritto misto.
Noli provides a perfect base for exploring north-west Italy, from the Cinque Terre to Portofino on the coast, to the villages and historical towns of Piedmont including the provincial capital Turin. France and Monte-Carlo are less than an hour away.
You may want to plan a longer stay in Noli as there are so many things to do!
There are a wide range of water sports which with the proper equipment, can be enjoyed in the autumn, winter and spring. Sailing and windsurfing at the local yacht club, minutes from the village centre, and scuba diving. The beach is beautiful and is ideal for walks, looking out over the immaculate sea of the bay of Noli, a sea that has earned the prized "Bandiera Blu" award for many years.
Most mornings the local fishermen haul up their boats onto the beach and sell the previous night's catch at the fish market and local farmers regularly bring in their produce to sell in the main square of the village. There is a market every Thursday selling everything from tee-shirts and sports shoes, to linen jackets and fun-fake jewellery.
Walks from the village can include visits to the Castello or the church of San Michele which stands high on the hill or an afternoon's stroll along the coast to Varigotti. Then there are this beautiful countryside and the charming villages in the hills behind Noli to discover each one with their restaurants, and there are many day trips that can be undertaken along the coast, both east and west, and into the north-west of Italy.
