About this location
The Herceg-Novi Municipality region
The Bay of Kotor, also known as Boka Kotorska, is a unique bay in the Mediterranean, one of the Mediterranean's most distinctive and striking landscapes.
The Bay of Kotor, located on the south side of the Adriatic Sea, actually consists of 4 small bays, which are all surrounded by mountains of 1000-1700 m rising directly from the water. The area is also known to have one of the most romantic landscapes to see in all of Montenegro.Boka Kotorska is under a strong influence of Mediterranean and Mountain climate. That special climate blend creates a distinguished Sub-Mediterranean climate quite different from other part of Montenegrin coast. Unique feature for Boka is the early spring when all surrounding mountains are still covered with snow while the coast flourishes with Mediterranean trees and flowers in blossom. During the winter one can enjoy the pleasant sun and calm weather on the coast while to the mountains and snow takes just 1 hour of slow drive.
Boka Kotorska is an exceptional cultural landscape created through the harmonious symbiosis of natural phenomena and man-made heritage which definitely should be on your "to do" list.
Herceg Novi sits facing the entrance to all of the beautiful Boka Bay surrounded by ancient walls and with two 600-year-old fortresses.
Known as Castelnuovo was founded in 1382 by Bosnian King Stjepan Tvrtko I. The Turks conquered H.Novi in 1482, and ruled for 200 years, until 1687. Since 1687 until 1797 city was part of the Republic of Venice.
Town has had a turbulent past and despite all has created a blend of diverse and picturesque architectural style in the city.
The most famous attractions are castle Forte Mare, the Clock tower, the Bloody tower, orthodox church St. Michael Archangel in central Belavista square and catholic the Church of St Jeroms. Herceg Novi is famous for being the sunniest place in Montenegro with over 200 days of sunshine per year.
