Home description
Les Arbres de Caunay is tucked away in real rural France. Providing an ideal haven for large groups who want to get away together, yet at the same time offering a degree of privacy when preferred, courtesy of the four self-contained units.
In an undiscovered part of France, you can enjoy an impressive range of attractions set in unspoilt countryside, all of which are easily accessible via the excellent road network. Within a day's drive of all the major Channel Ports, and especially convenient for arrivals at Poitiers, La Rochelle and Angoulême airports.
Many unusual species of flora and fauna can be found on your doorstep, and there are several nature reserves and areas of natural beauty in the region for all to visit. The property is next door to a large private fishing lake, and there are numerous other fishing venues locally. A selection of golf courses are within an hour's drive, and one of the region's major riding stables is in a neighbouring village.
For the culture-vultures, the nearby major centres of Poitiers, Angoulême and Niort display wonderful Romanesque architecture and a rich heritage. There are, however, many little gems to be found locally in the form of beautiful châteaux and surprisingly impressive village churches.

The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Deux Sevres region
Statistically the second sunniest part of France, summers are generally hot and sunny. Southern Deux Sèvres is essentially an agricultural area, with rolling fields of oil-seed rape, wheat, sunflowers and maize during the course of the year.
You can have the holiday of your choice in Poitou-Charentes: steeped in history and folklore, take your pick of statuesque architecture, roman heritage and local tradition. The surrounding countryside offers plenty of opportunities for enjoying the Big Outdoors, either on foot, by boat or on bikes.
The region is criss-croosed by rivers and canals, so there are various watery pursuits available, from fishing to boating, kayaking to sailing. Worth special mention is the unusual area between Niort and the Atlantic coast called the Marais Poitevin, or 'Venise Vert', where you can explore the strange green canals by punt or bike.
For a more high-tech experience, the internationally acclaimed Futuroscope is about 45 minutes away, offering at least one day out enjoying the thrills of the numerous virtual rides and many other impressive educational events for all ages.
If you are an animal lover, there is also a wide selection of attractions. Our favourite is the Vallée des Singes, 20 minutes away, where monkeys of every shape and size are kept in semi-captivity in a magnificent garden setting. The meal times for the various species are advertised, and informative talks are given at the same times.
If you are after a bit of sea and sand, the beautiful Atlantic beaches around La Rochelle are all accessible. We recommend La Châtelaillon Plage, or you can even go to the Iles de Ré and d'Oleron without leaving terra firma.
This is just a sample of the many and varied activities on offer in Poitou-Charentes. You could, of course, just enjoy the peace and quietness of the area, relaxing by the pool with a good book and a bottle of the local wine!
Sauze Vaussais / Caunay area
As with most of France, there is a weekly market in most of the towns closeby. Some are bigger than others, but all have an amazing variety of produce! One of the best nearby is Lezay, on a Tuesday morning, where you can buy live poultry and livestock, underwear, kitchen utensils, plants for the garden, cooked eels, knitting wools, fruit & veg, cheeses etc.etc.etc. Further afield, towards Cognac, the largest accessible market is at Rouillac, which is held on the 27th of each month, whatever day of the week that may be - why not combine this with a trip to one of the famous distilleries?
Tennis courts, horse-riding stables, tree-top adventure playground and municipal swimming pools are all available locally for the energetic. Château de Javarzay at Chef Boutonne is our nearest château, where there are often exhibitions and fêtes, and you can also take a gentle stroll around the attractive fishing lake in the grounds.
If you are here for Bastille Day (14th July) there are parties in every commune, often with firework displays - a good opportunity to meet the local residents! The best way to find out about all the topical local activities is from the Tourist Offices in Sauzé Vaussais and Chef Boutonne during your stay, where you can browse masses of flyers about what's on.
