The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Deux Sevres region
Your holiday gite is located at the geographic centre of the Poitou-Charentes, an area of varied landscapes, Romanesque architecture and quaint villages, many of which nestle at the side of the beautiful Charente River. Famous for its cognac, pineau, seafood and goats cheeses (a signposted car goats’ cheese trail makes a good day out), the area is a gastronomic delight.
Your gite is within easy reach of the sandy beaches at La Rochelle and Royan and the lovely islands of Oleron, Aix and Re, some of which are suitable for surfing and water sports. Other major places of interest to visit for the whole family to enjoy include the famous theme park 'Futuroscope' at Poitiers, Vallee des Singes (a superb zoo for primates, all free living on separate islands)and the 'Marais Poitevin' ( the Green Venice ) a marshland area of great beauty with a labyrinth of waterways linking quaint villages through wetland forests where you can go canoeing, punting , cycling or just watch others labour as you enjoy lunch al fresco.
There are various other locations for canoeing, kayaking and dinghy sailing on sheltered lakes and along the River Charente and a variety of zoos, leisure parks and other attractions to entertain the whole family.
Medieval towns like Chauvigny, Confolens, Montmorillon (see where the bookmaking art was established and flourished), St.Jean d'Angely with cobbled streets and gothic towers and fine cities like Cognac,(pause perhaps for a guided tour of the Hennessy, Remy Martin or Courvoisier distilleries) the spa town of Rochefort and walled cathedral cities of Angouleme or Poitiers are just some of the many historical places of interest to visit for the day or simply to shop and take a leisurely lunch.
With it's wonderful warm and sunny climate,(Poitou Charentes enjoys the second best micro climate in France after Provence), sunflower fields and vinegrowing countryside, your holiday gite is ideally placed for visiting the many family attractions, historical buildings and Chateaux throughout the region.
