The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Pyrenees Atlantiques region
Sauveterre de Béarn is one of the prettiest villages in the Béarn region, situated in the Département Pyrénées Atlantiques (64). The Département is roughly split between the Béarn and the Pays Basques, the French part of the greater Basques region that overlaps from north eastern Spain into south western France.
The mountains, the Atlantic and the Basque influence give the area an exotic quality which makes it unlike any region in France. From the high class sophistication of Biarritz to the open food markets of the Béarn, you will find a rich variety of tastes and experiences. Key places to visit include Pau, Biarritz and Bayonne, but do not miss the lesser known delights such as the tiny coastal village of Guéthary , St Jean Pied de Port in the foothills of the Pyrenees or the medieval centre of Salies de Béarn.
The Basques/ Béarn cuisine is distinctive and delicious, featuring specialities such as Pipérade (cooked peppers), Garbure (soup), and Poulet Basques, enhanced by local wines – the spicy reds of Iroleguey of the Pays Basque and the heavy Madiran of the Gers, plus the famed white wines of Jurançon – and the excellent ‘brebis’ cheese. There is also a wealth of seafood – Atlantic salmon, Arcachon oysters, muscles in white wine sauce – from the nearby coast.
Rugby, cycling, surfing and skiing all play a major part of life in the region. (See below). The Pyrénées Atlantique is part of Aquitaine, which was ruled by the kings of England until the late middle ages. The castle battlements in Bayonne were built by King Henry II in the 13th century. In the Napoleanic wars, British and Portuguese forces, led by the Duke of Wellington, crossed from Spain into France in 1813. Wellington laid siege to Bayonne and won decisive battles at Nivelle, and Orthez, eventually forcing the capitulation of the French army and the abdication of Napoleon.
Sauveterre de Bearn area
The major local festival in Sauveterre de Béarn is the annual Fete de la Blonde, held in the last week of August. The Fetes du Sel in Salies de Béarn, held in mid September is one of the busiest local festivals. The annual street festivals of Bayonne (mid August) and Dax are both major social occasions.
The 'Transhumances Musicales de Laàs', held at Chateaux de Laàs, 10 min drive from Sauveterre, is a festival of local music and culture. Sport: The famous local mountain routes (Col du Tourmalet and Col d’Aubisque) are regular features of the annual Tour de France cycling race.
Rugby is taken extremely seriously throughout the South West, with every local village boasting its own side. There was enormous pride when Sauveterre became the village champions on France in 2006. The major professional clubs nearby are Biarritz, Bayonne, Dax and Pau, and the area is a popular touring destination for British and Irish clubs, from school trips to pre-season professional tours. Local rugby stars include French legends such as Serge Blanco and Imanol Harinordoquy.
There are excellent ski resorts within easy driving distance of Sauveterre at Gourettes, La Pierre St Martin (both 1hr 10mins) and Cauterets (2hrs).
The deep waters off the Atlantic cost mean strong regular waves for much of the year, which is why the area has become the commercial centre of the European surf industry, with regular surf competitions in Guéthary, Biarritz and nearby Hossegor. Major surf companies such as Quicksilver and Billabong are based in the region. As well as the main surfing beaches, there are ideal family areas and rock pooling spots to discover and explore. Pelota is the most popular of the local Basques sports, and all local towns and villages boast a ‘Fronton’ playing area. St Palais, the closest Basque town to Sauveterre, hosts an annual Basque sports festival.
