La Conciergerie
About the home
This pretty Conciergerie, near to the Chateau, resembles a doll's house with its own private garden filled with roses and many other flowering shrubs with gravelled patio and parking. The picturesque River Saison (grade I for trout and salmon fishing) is just a 2 minute woodland walk through the grounds - an ideal tranquil spot for reading, sketching or even going for a cooling dip! The whole property is very light and airy with lovely period floor-to-ceiling windows which are complemented by colourful Basque fabrics and filled with country and wicker furniture. A charming wooden staircase leads to the 2 small double bedrooms (with their original chestnut floorboards) and shower room with loo which has been completely modernised. An ideal escape for couples/honeymooners.
Sauveterre de Bearn (the 'Pearl of the Bearn) is only 2 kms away - a medieval village with boulangeries, cafes and even a small supermarket. Many artists have been attracted to this area all inspired by the beautiful surrounding scenery and architecture. Water-rafting and salmon fishing on the nearby Gaves, friendly tennis club and golf course only a few kms. away. The great surfing beaches and cosmopolitan town of Biarritz are only 55 kms and the recently upgraded skiing resorts of Gourette and Pierre St Martin are approx 75 kms. The Spanish border can be reached in 45 mins by car.

The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Pyrenees Atlantiques region

The Chateau is situated on the Bearn/Basque border on the pilgrim's trail of St Jacques de la Compostelle. It was originally a fortified Chateau, controlling access across the River Saison from Navarre into Aquitaine. Owing to the magnificent Pyrenees due south, there is wonderful walking in the undulating green foothills dotted with lakes and rivers which are a haven for migratory birds, butterflies and wild flora. For the skiing enthusiast in winter, several skiing resorts have recently been upgraded - Gourette and Pierrre St Martin (approx. 75 kms). The renowned surfing beaches stretching along the Atlantic coast are only approx 55 kms. and the more sophisticated shops, restaurants and lively cafes can be found at Biarritz, St Jean de Luz and Bayonne. For the more adventurous, the Spanish border is only 45 mins by car, San Sebastien 2 hours and Pamplona 2 1/2 hours reached by a scenic drive over the Pyrenees.
The Sauveterre de Bearn area
Exciting day outings for water-rafting, and canoeing on the Gave d'Oloron. Excellent salmon and trout fishing on the Gaves nearby including our river - Le Saison - 'guides de peche' available on request. Many unusual wild flowers to be found in Spring including up to 60 different species of wild orchid in and around our area. A good small tennis club is in the medieval village of Sauveterre (2 kms) with 4 hard courts. Golf club with excellent restaurant is at Salies de Bearn (10 kms), the renowned Spa town with indoor salt water pool and beauty treatments! There are many colourful village festivals held throughout the summer and a particularly interesting one at Sauveterre in August - Fete de la Blonde - where the handsome local breed of cattle are proudly shown off in the village square together with miniature farm animals as well as various stalls laden with local produce.

La Conciergerie proved to be all that is advertised: from outside, though 19th century, seemed like an l8th century doll's house enhanced with the imaginative, comfortable furnishing by the owner. Everything one could need was provided, even a full cupboard of previous "renter's" food! It made such a difference to our week's stay that the Granville Millers were nearby to help with advice and were so easy and charming. The Bearn proved fascinating historically with some beautiful landscapes and small towns and excellent restaurants and boulangerie/patisserie, all within comparatively short motoring distances. Do go there!!! |

The bed was the most comfortable we had anywhere. The house provided everything we needed and we had the most interesting trips in the surrounding countryside. Weather was sunny every day except for one morning of rain. There is a choice of mountains or coast or just evening walks after dinner through the neighbouring villages. Liz had booked us into a local auberge for our first meal and we ate there many times afterwards. Would thoroughly recommend this for your holiday. |

"Highly recommended. Beautiful accommodation in a spectacular location, with lots to see and do in the area".
Charles M, Richmond-upon-Thames, England.
'The house is a delight to stay in - so pretty! My favourite moments have to be sitting in the garden admiring the flowers, wandering down to the river and later canoeing down the river - great fun! The area is fantastic, so varied'.
Elaine F, Bristol, England.
Hope you enjoy La Conciergerie' as much as we have'. Guy P, New Zealand.
