Home description

Situated in the picturesque village of Vernoil-le-Fourrier in the heart of the Loire Valley near Saumur this magnificent chateau was built in 1851 in the romantic architectural style of the Louis-Philippe period for 'Le Maitre' who was in charge of building the railways in the area. Externally the Chateau is built in the bright tuffeau stone (the local soft ivory stone typical of the area), herringbone red brick and red enduit with elaborate carvings and statues, huge luminous and 'oeil de beouf' windows and 'fairy-tale' pointed turret tower making it the tallest building in the village after the church.

Room features include original marble fireplaces, oak Parquet and Terre Cuite terracotta tiled floors, luminous floor to ceiling windows, ceiling moulding and decoration, paneled walls and doors and ceiling roses with crystal chandeliers. All the rooms are decorated with period antiques, furniture, objet'd'art and modern facilities combining comfort with luxurious and beautiful surroundings. Although the Chateau is lavishly furnished it has been lived in for many years and is a wonderful house for families with children of all ages.

The Loire Valley / Maine-et-Loire region

The region has become one of the most popular in France because of the many Chateau and vineyards. There are superb restaurants all within easy driving distances. The region is between 80 and 150 kms inland ensuring warm dry weather in the summer.

You will love the warm, sunny climate, which at this point becomes much more continental. The apple orchards come alive in the spring, which normally arrives a good month earlier than in the UK. The summer is generally warm and dry and ablaze with sunflower fields.

Saumur / Vernoil area

The area has many local attractions and is an ideal family location. Only 15 minutes drive from the Chateau is the historic town of Saumur famous for it's fairy tale Chateau, Cadre Noire and The National Riding Academy. The town is built primarily of the local tuffeau stone which gleams bright white in the strong summer sun. The Chateau of Saumur boasts panoramic views along the Loire valley.

The town is an interesting mixture of modern shops, paved walkways, markets and an old town where the streets are surprisingly steep upto the Chateau that sits above the town. It is renown for its sparkling white wines and is the largest producer of mushrooms in France, which are grown in the limestone caves which surround the town. It is also the home of the elite French Cavalry Regiment the Cadre Noire and the L'ecole Nationale the national school of equitation.

The region has become one of the most popular in France. The area also has some superb restaurants all within easy driving distance.
