Home description
The farmhouse has been carefully restored in an effort to retain the original features of the property, with beams, characteristic tiles and stone walls. The house looks out onto open countryside with fields and small copses and is not overlooked.
Although the gîte is fairly isolated it is only a short drive to the supermarket, other shops and a number of restaurants. The countryside is ideal for walking, cycling, horse riding or just relaxing and enjoying the country wildlife. There is also fishing nearby.
It is only 8 km from the historic town of Saumur where you can visit the château and will be spoilt for choice of restaurants. You can also try the numerous local wines or simply enjoy the shops.
The region generally has numerous châteaux and other historic buildings (such as Fontevrault Abbey) and is extremely good for eating out.
There are also a number of activity parks for families with younger children and the gîte is ideal for the active family.

The Loire Valley / Maine-et-Loire region
The gîte is 8km North of Saumur and the Loire river. It is under 1 hour drive from Angers and only a little more to Tours. The summer temperature averages 26 deg C in the Summer (although it is often into the 30s in late July and August) and about 5 deg C at the coldest time of the year - although it does sometimes get frost and even snow.
It is fairly flat countryside, being part of the Loire valley, and is easy walking or cycling countryside. Many of the villages in the area of regular fairs as well as occasional summer events.
The area is full of history - including English history. There are Norman influences in some older castles and it was part of the region inherited by the Plantagnets resulting from Henry II's marriage to Eleanor of Aquitaine. As more central parts of the Loire, it benefited from the building frenzy of the renaissance.
It was even a key part of the 2nd world war, with one bridge being a key part of the final French attempt to resist the Nazi invasion and the Loire formed the boundary between occupied France and Vichy France.
Saumur / St Philbert du Peuple area
St Philbert du Peuple and Longué are typical of the general countryside with a variety of events and activities through the year (and we attempt to provide information about these on our web site). In particular, there is a market in Longué on Thursday mornings.
Saumur has a full programme of holiday activities, including the Cadre Noire - a crack corps of the French cavalry that put on a number of displays - and occasional tank displays as well; there is also a massive museum of armoured warfare (the Musée des Blindés).
The château is enchanting and there are many beautiful sites in the town. Events include a Tablé in September, where 5000 sit down to a meal to celebrate the new harvest of the Champigny wine.
See our web site for details and more ideas of what to do.
How to get there
The most direct route from the UK by cross-channel ferry is probably via Ouistraham (Caen) using Brittany Ferries. However, Le Havre (LDLines) and St Malo (Brittany Ferries and Condor Ferries) are also convenient and in the Summer Brittany Ferries run a fast service to Caen and Condor to St Malo (from Poole).
Plane: Cheap flights into airports around as are on the increase. If you live within easy reach of Stansted airport, then you are spoilt for choice: you can fly from there to Tours, Poitiers and Limoges by Ryanair. You can also fly from Southampton (Flybe) or Liverpool (EasyJet) to Limoges, from several locations (Gatwick, possibly Birmingham) to Nantes (Air France and GB Airways) and from almost anywhere to Paris.
If you want to let the train take the strain, there is a really good TGV service to Tours and Angers (and it's easy to get a local train from either to Saumur). However, beware: to hire in Saumur (or Tours) you will either need to arrange it in advance or make sure that you get to your destination during open hours (basically 9-12 and 2-6, but Sundays and Mondays could be a problem generally).
