The Pays de la Loire region
The Loire valley was first made famous by the kings and nobility of France. Their presence can be seen in the magnificent Chateeax Abbeys and Churches. This World Heritage site has more than three hundred châteaux including Châteaux d'Amboise, Château de Chambord, Château d’Saumur, Château de Villandry and the breathtaking Chateau Chenonceau. Even Leonardo Da Vinci was drawn to their splendor. He lived at Chateau Clos Luce, now a museum to his genius.
This area is also known as the Garden of France after the many beautiful Orchards and Vineyards. You can enjoy a wine tour of this great region, either on a personal tour with one of our associated guides or independently using a pdf of all the vineyards and Caves of the Loire valley available, from our website.
La Grande Maison is situated in the wine appellations of Anjou and Thoursais and are within easy reach of the Saumur, Chinon, Saint-Nicholas de Bourgueil, Touraine, or the famous sparkeling Saumr Brut or Loire Crement.
If you are here in the Autumn why not take part in the Vendange. The Grape harvest is the busiest time of year for the Wine producers and they are always looking for a spare pair of hands.
Here is a link to a video of last years harvest at Terre Blanches. A vineyard in Oiron a short bike ride from the house
For family days out there are lots of theme parks in the area.
Parc du Futuroscope is a theme park like no other. Its based upon multimedia cinematographic futuroscope and audio-visual techniques. It has several 3D cinemas and a few 4D cinemas along with other attractions and shows, some of which are the only examples in the world.
Puy du Fou Visitors go on journeys through time to enjoy lavish historical enactments: in one, a Viking longboat sails downriver to raid a village; in another, a jousting tournament turns into the storming of a medieval keep and another you are transported the the colosium in Rome. There are also breath-taking shows at night, as well as 25 restaurants and 50 hectares of countryside
Bioparc Zoo is set in ancient quarries, former lime kilns and cathedral-like caves, Bioparc Zoo is one of the finest in Europe. The zoo is part of the European Endangered species Programme. Animals are not captured or bought in. Instead, animals are exchanged between zoos. Breeding programs and scientific research, coupled with an adaptive approach to animal care and new developments in the design of enclosures, help to improve the well-being of the animals and contribute towards making zoos more like the animals' natural environment.
Park Terra Botanica is is the first theme park dedicated to the plant. The whole family is invited to live an extraordinary adventure ... It carries all ages in interactive adventures in 11 acres of gardens, pool areas and greenhouses, all punctuated with 40 attractions and activities for sensational discoveries.
The Loire Valley and Poitou-Charente benefits from 2,400 hours of sunshine a year. On average this is 750 hours more than the south of the UK. This makes it the second hottest and sunniest place in the country. Our region, located in the west of France is renowned for having one of the most pleasant climates, along with the French Riviera. Winters are really mild and thanks to the oceanic climate, summers are hot but not muggy!
La Grande Maison is situated between the market towns of Loudun and Thouars and a short drive from Saumur or Chinon.
Saumur is situated across the Loire. Half the town is on the south bank while the remainder is on an island. The town is very beautiful in particular the Chateau on the top of the hill looks out over the Loire river and is a great place to enjoy stunning views. Saumur is the home of the world famous Cadre Noir and the National Equestrian school.
A short way upstream are the troglodyte caves of the Loire Valley. Some are used as cellars and for wine production including Gratien & Meyer producers of the very refined sparkling wine of the region. You can enjoy a very interesting tour of there underground caves and then after enjoy a tasting. Ask for your free ticket when you stay at La Grande Maison. Others are where the Champigny mushrooms are grown and some are even churches, restaurants and houses. You can visit many off them. There are also boat trips on the Loire from here.
Carrying on up stream opposite Chateau Montsoreau the river is joined by the River Vienne a few miles up the Vienne you will find the historical town of Chinon. On the hill is the fortified chateau a resident of two Counts of Anjou who were also Kings of England, Hernry II and Richard the Lion Heart. There are many fine restaurants and bars in the medieval streets at the center of the town.

"Extremely special place!"
Nine friends and I stayed at La Grand Maison for a cycling holiday in the Loire Valley during the May half term. We were blown away by the stunning, characterful house and by the very friendly and hospitable hosts, Ben and Billie and their lovely daughter, Ella. The breakfast was excellent and we paid to have supper put on for us one evening, which was so special. It was preceded with a trip down to the candle-lit wine cellar to learn about and taste wine with Ben. There is lots of space to walk around in the vast garden and a stream. The bedrooms are delightful and the cooking facilities good. Being musicians, we were especially taken with the ballroom where Ben and Billie make music (both pro musicians!). What a wonderful stay from start to finish. I have recommended it to friends and will be going back for sure.

"Beautiful accommodation, wonderful hosts, amazing location - perfect for group bookings"
This is a wonderful place to base yourself if exploring the Loire Valley, or even for just relaxing in the tranquil gardens of the house, which is perfectly set in the heart of rural France.
The English hosts are the most friendly and welcoming I've ever come across - great local knowledge too which helps for planning some authentic, not-in-the-guidebook days out. They are happy for you to treat it as your own home from home, which makes for such a relaxing break.
The house and gites are very geared up for group bookings, and the perfect location for a bunch of friends or something like a cycling holiday.
The buffet breakfast was one of the best I've ever had, really well presented either in the grand dining room or outside in the sunny garden if the weather allows. The BBQs, games room and outdoor dining area provide the ingredients for many great evenings eating and drinking local wine outside.
I can't recommend this place highly enough, we will definitely be going back, probably again and again.
