The Loire Valley region

A perfect situation to discover the Loire Valley at the crossroads between Anjou and Touraine. The region has been given many names:

The Garden of France - fresh asparagus, strawberries, mushroom caves and a thriving horticulture sector.

The Valley of the Kings - the hunting ground of the French kings, with spendid hunting ldoges and chateaux

La Douceur Angevin - the gentle art of living, excellent cuisine and wines.

Tours - an International City of Gastronomy

Steeped in history.

Joan of Arc had a historic meeting with the future King of France Charles VII at Chinon.

The Plantagenets were great benefactors of the Fontevraud abbey, the largest abbey in Europe.

A UNESCO World Heritage site within Loire-Anjou-Touraine French regional natural park.

Angers, the cradle of the Plantagenet dynasty and at that time one of the intellectual centres of Europe

Loire Valley Wines

The Loire Valley is the only wine growing region in France which produces high quality wines in every style. Red, white and rosé, still and sparkling, from dry to sweet. Whatever tickles your taste buds, there is always an excellent Loire Valley wine to suit the occasion.

The Loire is known for its mild climate year-round. Mild springs and autumns, tolerably chilly winters and hot, sunny summers. The area north of the Loire tends to have less rainfall than south of the river.

Parcay Les Pins is a small village conveniently situated in a triangle formed by Anger, Tours and Le Mans, all of which can be reached under 1 hour and have excellent tram systems. These three historic cities all have historic quarters worth a visit. Angers is regarded as the most 'chic' for shopping and restaurants, Tours has the reputation of being an International City of Gastronomy and Le Mans, with its Grand Prix race track, has a fine cathedral and old town.

Closer to hand are the towns of Saumur, Chinon and Bourgueil. The houses and chateaux are built in local tuffeau stone, which glow with warmth. Chateaux are dotted around the rolling countryside. The chateau of Saumur sits majestically above the River Loire, whilst the Fortress at Chinon is an imposing site above the River Vienne.

The famous French cavalry school is the Cadre Noir is based in Saumur.

Gorgeous gardens to visit, vineyards to explore, river trips, zoos and parks for the children, mushroom caves and museums ranging from contemporary art to military tanks, horsemanship to motor museums, aquariums to wine-making.

The rolling countryside is perfect for cyclists, with forest tracks to explore. A good area for walking.

The lake at Rillé has a nature reserve at one end and a steam train which runs by the lake in the summer.

Have just returned from a wonderful holiday at Les Mortiers. Jean and Mike were very welcoming and made us feel at home straightaway. The gite was spotlessly clean and so well equipped with everything you could possibly think of and more. It is the ideal location to just chill out and watch the local wildlife. At the same time there are so many places to visit nearby without having to travel too far and its great to have a relaxing swim after a day out in the gorgeous pool. A return visit is definitely on the cards.
