Enquire nowThe Loire Valley / Maine-et-Loire region
The Loire Valley / Maine-et-Loire region
The Loire area derives much of its fame from the large number of historically interesting buildings and towns that exist in the area.
For hundreds of years it was the region where the French aristocracy would come to relax and replenish energy reserves depleted by constant warring with the English.
The Loire area has extensive forests that provided the nobility with excellent hunting. To guarantee their comfort while in the area, they constructed opulent chateaux many of which are still standing and can be visited today.
The river itself has now been designated a world heritage site - a testament to the importance placed on the conservation of the wetland habitat which borders the longest river in France.
The Saumur / Allonnes area
The Saumur / Allonnes area
Saumur is an ancient, bustling market town, full of historic and elegant townhouses. It straddles a strategic and beautiful stretch of the River Loire. The Chateau de Saumur, the local wines, the sandy banks of the river, the equestrian traditions and historical sites, all the threads that typify the Loire region seem to be gathered together in Saumur. For those that find the town centre a little too comfortable, there are many trogolodite caves and dwellings to contemplate nearby.
There are many activities which can be enjoyed in the area. For those who enjoy cycling there is a huge network of cycle paths. These lead you down leafy country tracks or small roads and provide another way to enjoy the magnifent local countryside. There are many marked walks that can be enjoyed in the local forests. Nearby is an equestrian centre where horse-riding can be enjoyed. For those who like golf there is a 12 hole golf course just the other side of Saumur in a pretty town called St Hilaire de Florent. This is also the site of the famous Gratien Meyer sparkling wine and a wine tasting here could replace the normal 25th hole! In both Saumur & Bourgeuil there are riverside water parks set alongside the Loire where you can swim or hire dingys or canoes.
La Maison Fleurie lies at the heart of the famous Chinon, Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil, Bourgueil and Saumur Champigny wine growing areas which are all within easy reach. Wine tastings are readily arranged on request.
In the immediate vicinity of La Maison Fleurie , on the outskirts of Allonnes, lies the renowned Parc de Maupassant which boasts fine walks and a fine selection of gardens including a magnificent rose garden and a world famous peony collection. In neighbouring Brain sur Allonnes there is a medieval botanical garden with borders that feature over 600 varieties of medicinal and gastronomic plants and herbs. Throughout history these have been used for a variety of purposes including poisoning, very occasional healing and fairly frequent forays into witchcraft. Also in Brain are located world-famous caves where aspiring artists daubed in paleolithic times.
Allonnes (only 2.5 kms away) has a range of small shops including bread shops, a butcher, traiteur and, most importantly, a supermarket that is even open on Sunday mornings! It also has a garage, banks, hairdressers, & bars.
