Le Palais is a luxury apartment tucked behind Place St. Pierre, the chic central square of Saumur - the heart of the medieval city's activity.

Walk one flight up the spiral staircase to enter your hideaway, or take the lift. Open the shutters to breathe in the relaxed ambiance of the old city. Or just cuddle into your French hideaway with a glass of one of the famous Anjou Region wines. There will be an "Innkeeper's Choice" bottle awaiting you!

Walk the few steps into Place St. Pierre, a bustling delight of cafes, bistros, boulangeries, historic buildings and boutiques of every price range radiating in all directions. Leave your car parked - everything is within an easy stroll.

Le Palais' brand-new efficiency kitchen is completely outfitted, should you decide to take a meal "chez vous." The modern bathroom includes both tub and shower, as well as a washing machine for your convenience. The WC is separate from the bath. WiFi throughout, and English TV channels, too!

Relax on the sinfully comfortable oversize double bed amid oodles of pillows. Through the bedroom windows you'll see the 12th century church "l'Eglise St. Pierre." Throw open the shutters and windows - watch the activity on the street below in complete privacy.

The generous-sized salon is comfortably modern, offering you all the basic electronic distractions, plus games and books in both English and French.

Traveling with another couple or the children? The salon's leather sofa opens to a queen-sized bed.

Le Palais is the perfect romantic hideaway to enjoy with someone special, yet is roomy enough for two couples or a small family who want to experience Saumur together.

This is a superb location from which to explore the area. Place St. Pierre is a short distance from the train station. Free parking is near the apartment. The autoroutes are just minutes away (though they are totally unseen - and unheard - from the city itself).

There are plenty of opportunities for wine-tasting right in Saumur, and countless more in the surrounding area. Let the wonderful staff at the Tourism Office help you choose the museums, vineyards, chateaux ... and any other sights that will tailor your holiday perfectly for you!

The Loire Valley region

As the Loire River runs west towards the Atlantic, it enters this serene region of lush countryside, vineyards and sandy riverside beaches.

The climate is quite temperate all year 'round. There are an average of 270 sunny days annually, with spring and summer claiming the majority. Winter temperatures seldom fall below 5C (40F). Spring days tend to be 11C-16C on average (60s-70s F). Summers are lovely, sunny, warm and breezy, with lows averaging 18C (70F) and seldom above 25C (85F).

The region boasts a wealth of chateaux, cultural highlights, traditional markets and boutique shopping, fine dining, wine tasting and enough sporting activities to satisfy just about any visitor! You can aslo just relax into the gentle rhythm of the relaxed Western Loire Valley.

Saumur is alson known as the Loire Valley's White City, as many of the stately, 16th-18th century buildings were erected from limestone mined from the nearby hillsides. These limestone cliffs are riddled with pre-historic troglodyte caves, which in modern times have been converted to wineries, mushroom farms and even restaurants.

Saumur is the home of the Chateau de Saumur, which dominates the landscape from its hilltop setting over the Loire River. The Chateau, 15th century home of the Anjou kings was begun in 1246 and is a rare example of 14th century architecture, which evolved at the end of the Middle Ages and foreshadowed the Renaissance style.

The Chateau houses The Musée des Arts Décoratifs, (period tapestries and china), and the Musée du Cheval, which features bridles and saddles in an impressive collection that spans time and space. The popular Musee des Blindes (Tank Museum) is a must-see favourite for many who visit Saumur.

Since we are mad about horses, Saumur holds a special place in our hearts. This charming city is the heart of ancient French military equestrian traditions. At École Nationale d'Équitation, the home of the National Riding School, you'll see the centuries-old pride of Saumur, the Cadre Noir, the crack-shot cavalry trainers of an earlier time. In addition to tours and performances by the Cadre Noir, international equestrian competitions are regular occurrences. Those who follow dressage, eventing and jumping can sit ringside while their favourite stars compete!

The Loire Region is dotted with vineyards boasting some world renowned wines like Vouvray, as well as some lesser known finds such as Bouvet, and other champagnoise wines that we find better than many Champagnes - in price as well as taste. There are many intruiging local wines, memorable restaurants, chic boutiques and unique historical sites in and around Saumur.

Champigny, Bourgueil and Chinon are full red wines. We also have good rosés such as Cabernet d'Anjou and Rosé d'Anjou, and there are also the Muscadets and sweet white wines of the Coteaux de Layon area.

Hint: Don't hesitate to try some of the regional wines costing less than 10€ – you will be pleasantly surprised!

"Fantastic location and very well maintained apartment"

We stayed for a week in this lovely apartment. It is right in the centre of Saumur and is walking distance to many brilliant restaurants & shops. We followed Karen's directions to the apartment (rather than Apple's iMap) and they were excellent. The door number is very tiny and I think maybe should be replaced by a more noticeable one, but a very minor gripe! Parking wasn't a problem. We parked 50 yards from the flat for 1/2 the week and in the free car park the rest of the week. Parking charges are pretty cheap. There was building work going on in the church next door but this wasn't at all intrusive. The kitchen was well equipped with herbs, olive oil, tea, coffee, cleaning products etc so we didn't have to buy incidentals like that. We had a very relaxed time. One of the things we did which I would recommend is a visit to the Caves Louis de Grenelles, where we went on a tour of the tunnels under Saumur and had the workings of the wine making process explained to us and ended with a wine tasting. We tried 6 different restaurants which were all within an easy walking distance and our favourite was the wonderful Escargot.

"Great base to explore Loire Vally"

We received a lot of very helpful information and instructions from the owner that we printed off before we left. It was still a little tricky to find but I think this is the nature of the winding streets of the area.A slight hitch to picking up the key but once inside we found the apartment was very pleasant and comfortable.
The welcome basket was very generous and very much appreciated .
A very nice area to shop for food in with market mearby. I mainly cooked in at night and the kitchen was beautifully outfitted.
Bed was extremely comfortable.
The only thing that would make the stay more enjoyable is Wi Fi.
Parking was a little tricky at times but mostly we were exploring in the car all day and just back at night.

Thanks so much for taking the time to review Your Le Palais stay - this is what helps us make guests' experience better and better. We now have WiFi and English language TV!
