Had a great time at Les Fleurs – great weather – loved the pool. Great meals provided by Jon and Sue – Thank you. Loved the Zoo at Doue la Fontiane, well worth visiting – particularly the baby leopards – really good day out. We visited lots of Chateaux, villages and churches – all great and enjoyed discovering France. Thank you Jon and Sue we had a wonderful time. P.S. forgot to mention the horses at the Cadre Noir – do go – get the chance not only to see the show but to wonder around the stables – talk to the horses and see the lessons! Great!
Karen & Cliff from Kent UK September 2012
3rd visit and we had a lovely time again. Went to the Leonardo Davinci Park. We met some lovely people. Thank you for all your help.
Leah from Ashington August 2012
Another brilliant and relaxing holiday at LYS, Thank you for the wine tasting. See you both next time.. WONDERFUL.. Have booked again for 2014.
Sarah and Nick Ashington August 2012
This was our first visit to both the Loire and Les Fleurs and neither disappointed. The gite is perfectly situated in some fabulous surroundings and is well designed and thought out. We loved the garden particularly first thing in the morning for breakfast.Jon and Sue are fantastic hosts, always on hand but never in your face, making us fell that we were welcomed and trusted guests. The evening meal the first Sunday was a tour de force, so thank you for that delicious option. We also recommend sampling their collection of wines – as good as any we have tasted this week.In one week, we have managed to fit in: 1 Abbey, 1 Cathedral, 1 Church, 4 Chateaux, 1 tank museum, and a 13km canoe trip, so it's fair to say that the Loire has everything, coupled with amazing weather, it has made this a fantastic holiday and the first of many to come.Best wishes and hope to visit again soon!!
Sam and Kate from Essex August 2012
Our 3rd year at Les Fleurs and things couldn't be better! Jon and Sue make this the perfect holiday for us. Nothing is too much trouble – This years wine tasting was great – Both Jon and Sue are dedicated to making sure the holiday has everything. Sue's cooking continues to impress. Booked for 2013 already. Countdown starts NOW! Thanks again to you Both
Andrew and Krysha from Leicester July 2012
Our first holiday aboard with our 15 month son Oliver and we couldn't have picked a better gite or location. Jon and Sue were amazing more like friends rather than hosts, nothing was too much trouble.
Lots of things to do. Would definitely recommend the zoo at Doue la Fontaine. Oliver loved it and you can get so close to the animals. We would also suggest Puy du Fou as it is a theme park experience like no other. The cottage was fantastic from the beautiful garden to the toys and brick truck all provided for Ollie. There has been so many first here for Oliver. This has been a perfect holiday that will remain in our memory for ever. We will defiantly be back and will recommend to everyone. Thank you Jon and Sue for everything!! The only regret we have is not having one the beautiful meals by Jon and Sue. Unfortunately Oliver loved the place so much he was not in bed before 21.30 which ruled the meals out. However this gives us an extra reason to return!!
Paul, Kate and Oliver 2 weeks! Cheshire July2012
A most memorable week in the Loire. Les Fleurs is in a great location. Information provided by Jon and Sue for planning our itinerary and sightseeing, especially chateaux. A wonderful last evening dinner with fellow guests. Sue's culinary expertise and Jon's service were superb! Pete and Sharon Auckland New Zealand July 2012

A wonderful stay. Our first time finding a place via the internet but it was all it was stated to be. Wonderful hosts, marvellous cook, great pilot and the surroundings so well done from nothing. We can only say merci beaucoup but that does not seem enough.
Lorraine and Dennise from Florida USA June 2012

David and Ruth from Cambridgeshire April 2012
So much to see and too little time, We MUST come back. A great location to explore the area and taste some of the best wines and cheeses in the World! Tip Chateau Breze combines a Chateau with Troglodyte site plus has wine tasting. It is just around the corner from Cave de Saumur a cooperative of all local vineyards and is well worth a visit. Thanks Jon and Sue for your hospitality and accommodating our 3 month old Son.
Emma, Gerard and James from Guernsey March 2012
Excellent meal on our first evening, just what we needed! Recommended the caves (vintners) at Le Puy Notra Dame and Les Verchers sur Layon – Excellent value and St. Cyr en Bourg well worth a visit. Very peaceful holiday – just what we wanted. Sue and Jon are there if you want them to be – but in no way intrusive. Would love to come back.
Lloyd & Teresa from Hertfordshire England October 2011
Very welcoming, comfortable stay in a good location to visit the fabulous gardens, Chateaux & the pretty little historic villages around here – Too many cheeses & far too much pate and wine!! – We had a splendid time, including a visit in the patio from a red squirrel!!

Nia and Martin from Tunbridge Wells UK August 2011
This is our second visit to Les Fleurs and we are already planning our third! The welcome we received from Jon and Sue made us feel like returning friends rather than holiday makers. LYS is absolutely beautiful, full of character and immaculate. Our Son had plenty to do, loved the play area and of course the large pool. Set in a perfect location, quiet and peaceful, however very close to supermarkets and local attractions. It's been the perfect holiday and we wish Jon and Sue the very best.
Mark, Nikki & Scott. From Sussex UK August 2011
A quirky, Quaint and cosy holiday home. You are in a wonderful place with gorgeous countryside and lots of lovely places to visit. We have thoroughly enjoyed our short stay in LYS and very much appreciate the fantastic meal cooked by Sue and Jon. Thank you.
Alan & Carol Crumlin Northern Ireland August 2011.
Dear Sue and Jon. Your gite is right on & perfectly suited for baby. The dinner for two was perfect and beautifully flavoured, better than going out.
The whole week long we couldn't go wrong, your guides were great, a swim in your pool made us happy, your roses are divine. We are new to staying in gites but wish we could stay until September.
Thank you Jon and Sue.

After 2 days traveling, what a great spot to relax and enjoy this first taste of France. Thanks to Sue and Jon for preparing a very comfortable cottage. We will tell our friends and advise them to spend longer in the Loire Valley. We enjoyed every minute.

Had a marvellous week at Les Fleurs. The cottage was so well equipped and comfortable. Jon & Sue had thought of everything. We loved being served amazing diners on our own private patio – definitely a highlight along with a wonderful flight over the Loire Valley with Jon, an absolute must! There is so much to see and do around here and we could gladly put the word out to other travelling Canadians – You will be seeing a lot more of us. Thank you so much.

On reading this book it is hard to believe that others have slept in this magical place. Lys is a lovely gite and felt like home. Sue and Jon have organised everything so well; and nothing is too much trouble. Will recommend this place to everyone but only tell special people the address because its one place that feels special to me.
Alan & Sandra from Nottingham February 2011
Our first visit to Les Fleurs and an excellent week. Jon and Sue have been excellent hosts providing very useful advice on wines and vineyards to visit. Their information folder was extremely useful. On top of this they also serve superb cuisine if asked. Their house wines are good value and nice quality.
Ann & Andrew from Somerset October 2010
Another wonderful visit. Thanks Sue and Jon for your attentiveness. You are excellent chefs we cannot recommend the in house meals highly enough. Chenonceaux and Villandray were a joy to visit. Thank you again

Lovely gite. My favourite bit was going to Terra Botanica and lying on the sun bed in the garden. A great spot to get to all the attractions. Wonderful visit, wish it was just the first day again. Second time here its great!!
Leah from Ashington August 2010
Lovely place to stay – Great location. Loved the pink fizz from Jon's cellar! Definitely recommend. Would also recommend the Chateau at Brisac – good tour. If you want something a bit mad – the then mushroom tour in the caves is interesting!

Our second time in LYS was just as special as the first! It is so romantic and peaceful. Jon and Sue made the trip the best, just wish we could stay longer! We must recommend the sparkling rose from Jon's cellar, to future guests. Thanks again Jon and Sue, see you next time we visit.

Plenty to do and see in the area from splendid formal gardens of Villandry to the local troglodyte village which was so interesting. Jon and Sue looked after us very well and we enjoyed 2 super meals on our patio.

Charming rustic quirky holiday home. Had everything we needed and much more (even a rolling pin). Enjoyed having our own secluded rose garden, where on our last evening Jon served us a delicious meal cooked by Sue including home made bread. Overall a very enjoyable holiday.

Enquire nowThe Loire Valley / Maine-et-Loire region
Known as the Garden of France this area is glorious.
It is also noteworthy for the quality of its architectural heritage, in its historic towns such as Amboise, Angers, Blois, Chinon, Nantes, Orléans, Saumur, and Tours, but in particular for its world-famous châteaux, such as Amboise, Chambord, Villandry and Chenonceau and more particularly its many cultural monuments, which illustrate to an exceptional degree the ideals of the Renaissance.
On December 2, 2000, UNESCO added the central part of the Loire River valley, between Maine and Sully-sur-Loire, to its list of World Heritage Sites
Warm summers and balmy evenings are an apt description of the weather in the Loire. Mild spring weather brings out the buds on the trees and spring flowering bulbs much earlier than in the UK. Autumn is glorious with evenings often still warm enough to BBQ.
The Saumur / Les Verchers Sur Layon area
There are numerous attractions in the area, apart from the many Chateaux, the zoo at Doue la Fontaine, just 4 minutes away, is world famous for its conservation policy.
The world renowned Cadre Noir is based in Samur and apart from its frequent shows, there are weekly demonstrations that are open to the public For the more adventurous Puy du Fou, Futurscope and several adventure parks are all within easy driving distance.
The rose garden in Doue la Fontaine has hundreds of astounding roses on display and makes for a wonderful day out wandering around the rose gardens enjoying the scents and visions of these fabulous roses
Local villages hold events throughout the year and frequent wine festivals and open days at vinter make this an ideal area to visit.
Golf, horse riding, tennis, water sports, go karting, bird watching, cycling and walking are all easily available.

We stayed at Lys and found it to be a wonderful place to spend a week. The actual cottage was clean and tidy and it was great to have BBC channels during the Olympics! The town of Doue La Fontaine doesn't offer a great deal except for a zoo and local amenities but the nearby town on Saumur was really pleasant with plenty of vineyards and wine tasting, as well as river activities and possibly the most picturesque chateau in the Loire. Over all, to stay here you need to be prepared to drive quite a bit, but if you are then it is great. Oh and if Sue and Jon still offer dinner on certain nights, then go for it because the cooking is amazing! Response: We are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay at Les Fleurs and thank you for your comments regarding our meals and wines. Not sure that we understand your thoughts on Doue la Fontaine etc when you walk out of our gates there are lots of vintners offering wine tastings. Two are within 200 yards. Perhaps you didn't investigate Doue la Fontaine and the sites close by enough as guests who return year on year come back because we are at the centre of so much. Apart from the world famous Zoo, Doue la Fontaine is the rose garden of France and has Les chemins de la Rose is a 4 hectares landscaped floral park planted with 1300 varieties of botanical, old and modern roses; there are numerous cafes and restaurants also the troglodytique town of Rochemenier, just a few minutes from Doue La Fontaine, The Museum of Commerce in Doue la Fontaine, takes you back to the 19th century shopping experience, Mushroom museums where you can taste the different varieties; Caves Lumiere a troglodytiques setting with sculptures are all within 15 minutes of our property. Travelling a little further afield. But staying within 30 minutes to 1 hour's drive we have: Puy du Fou, Monteuil Bellay, Saumur, Breze, Montsereau and Brissac Chateaux not forgetting the chateaux of Valendry, Asay du Riddeau and others. Plus the Beautiful villages with beautiful churches of Canault, Chenutte and Treves are just 20 minutes. Doue la Fontaine has many bars, restaurants, 5 supermarkets, sports Shops, fishing shops, an excellent market on Monday's plus tennis courts An indoor swimming pool, skate Boarding Park to name but a few. There is a file in the gite giving a comprehensive overview of everything in the area, in future we will point this file out to guests incase they miss it. We do hope to welcome you all back one day and we can talk over all the nearby sites you missed. |
