THE LOIRE VALLEY
The word 'château' belongs to the Loire Valley, its very mention inspires images of grand extravagant castles, exquisite gardens and vast moats. It encapsulates the intrigue of French history and a romantic vision of France.
From the 15th to the 18th centuries the Loire was the playground of Kings, Princes, Dukes and Nobles their family fortunes and the wealth of France turned it into a vast neighbourhood of lavish châteaux. Rich and concentrated in architectural treasures Unesco named the entire region a World Heritage Site in 2000.
The Renaissance architecture and earlier defensive fortresses glimpsed at Angers, Chinon and Loche are stunning and numerous other châteaux big and small can be found throughout the Loire.
The Saumur area
SAUMUR
Twined with Warwick, England and Verden, Germany the historical town of Saumur is set along the banks of the Loire river. Hosting a fabulous Satruday morning market Saumur is also home to the famous Cadre Noir, the National Equestrian School of the elite French Cavalry, the remarkable horsemanship of the Cavalry and their beautiful horses can been seen between April & October are regularly held shows.
With many activities, exhibitions and wine festivals scheduled throughout the year Saumur is a worthy visit, if not only to see the Cadre Noir and the impressive Château, which has been lovingly restored, but to also enjoy the beauty of this stunning river side town in the heart of the Loire Valley, France.
Restaurant Recommendation : Bistrot Les Tontons, Place Saint Pierre, 49400 Saumur - notable for its excellent selection of quality wines and cuisine served with a twist of 'je ne sais quoi' - a wine lovers haunt.
MONTREUIL-BELLAY
Dominating the pretty medieval town of Montreuil-Bellay is its magnificent fairy tale Château whose impressive great wall still encloses the town centre to this day. An abundance of flower blooms throughout spring to the cooling months of winter Montreuil-Bellay is a pretty town to discover.
Host to a weekly market and a monthly Brocante (flea-market) there are a number of interesting restaurants to lunch & dine at, the Château to visit and a lovely picnic area, shaded by trees, set along the edge of the river Thouet which flows through the town, whilst eating your baguettes the resident ducks will pay you a visit hoping for some crumbs.
Restaurant Recommendation : Hostelliere Saint Jean, 432 rue Nationale, 49260 Montreuil-Bellay - notable for its excellent choice of cuisine and service - the ideal spot for 'les gourmandes'.

This was our third visit to La Bellevue and it still remains one of my favourite places to visit. There are two gites at La Bellevue and both are truly immaculate. We have stayed in both and this... more |

Words cannot describe adequately how much we enjoyed our stay at Annie's House at La Bellvue. Sharah-Jane and Gerald were so welcoming. The accommodations exceeded my expectations. Very well equipped, spotlessly clean, tastefully appointed and lovely bedding! The setting is lovely , the gardens are beautiful and the view from our private patio breathtaking. Both Sarah-Jane and Gerald are extremely knowledgeable about the area and are happy to share tips for day trips, restaurants etc. Gerald is particularly knowledgeable about wine and wine making. He has had years of personal experience in the vineyards of Loire and is happy to share his knowledge in a professional but totally unpretentious manner. I would highly recommend you book one of Gerald's wine experiences through their website www.loirevalleyuncorked.net , a thoroughly enjoyable way to learn about the wines of the Loire. |

Annie's House was the perfect home away from home for us. We were warmly welcomed immediately and felt very spoiled. The house is a beautiful setting, perfect location for the Loire Valley and our gracious hosts, Sarah Jane and Gerald, made sure all of our needs were met. We highly recommend Gerald's wine tour as well. You will not be disappointed. |
