The Tuscany region

Cetona

13 km, about 15 minutes by car.

In the district of Cetona there is one of the most ancient settlements of the Central Italy, dating back to 40.000 years ago. It is worth visiting the Archaeological Park of “Belverde” and its 25 pre-historic caves, the pre-historic Museum, the Church of Most Holy Trinity with its frescos by Pinturicchio, the Vitelli Palace.

Castiglione del Lago

40 km, about 50 minutes by car.

Founded by the Romans with the name of Novum Clusium (Nuova Chiusi), this little town has kept its ancient structure with perpendicular streets (cardo and decumanus).

In April there is a manifestation during which the town fills with kites: “Let’s Colour the Sky”. In April there is also the Feast of the Tulip and on a Sunday morning the village wakes up completely adorned with hundreds of thousands tulips coming out of the windows, balconies, shop-windows and doors.

Bagno Vignoni

This Village, with its houses, inns and its Church of San John the Baptist, rises all around a big rectangular basin, with a spring of thermal waters. This element, still in the centre of the village, clearly recalls to some typical aspects of the Roman thermal-bath plants.

Its closeness to the via Francigena made it possible for the less hasty travellers on the way to Rome to know and use its waters.

The waters of Bagno Vignoni are bicarbonate-sulphate-alkaline-earthy hyper-thermal with a temperature of 51°C.

Arezzo

Arezzo: 75-km far, it can be reached in about 55-minute car

One of the most important towns in Etruscan times, it produced artistic works of great value, such as the Chimera, a refined bronze statue that is now kept in Florence. The town went on flourishing under the Romans, when the Theatre, the Thermal Baths and the Amphitheatre were built. With the spreading of Christianity, Arezzo became the seat of the episcopacy and the Old Cathedral was built. Important Ghibelline town, it was defeated by the Sienese army in the Battle of Campaldino, which also Dante Alighieri took part to on the Guelphs’ side. The Church of San Domenico is one of the most famous sacred buildings in Arezzo, due to the wooden crucifix by Cimabue, that is considered one of the masterpieces of the thirteenth-century painting. The Medicean Fortress, precious example of sixteenth-century military architecture, was planned by Antonio di Sangallo and built by the will of Cosimo I Medici, in the half of 1500.

Bagni San Filippo

25-km far, about 30 minutes by car.

Small thermal spot, it is characterised by its calcareous deposits formed by the waters springing out of stones and creating abundant concretions; the most impressive one is a solidified water-fall known by the name of “White Whale”. The waters of San Filippo are classified as sulphide-sulphate-bicarbonate hyper-thermal. Their temperature is 52°C.

Sarteano

You will have the possibility to walk among pomegranates, oaks, plum-trees, chestnuts and maple tress, among lavender and rosemary bushes, among perfumed geraniums, to admire our rose-garden, to meet pheasants, hares, foxes and partridges, to pluck the fruits of our trees, to take advantage of our kitchen-garden, to relax by our swimming-pool, and, in summer time, to have dinner accompanied by the melody of crickets and surrounded by fire-flies.
