The Attica region
It is hard to find a country with a richer history than Greece with the first settlement dating from 11.000-3000 BC making it an extremely exciting destination to explore! An infamous mythology adds to the varied cultural fabric of the country. This all provides stunning architecture for the visitor to admire including many churches (Greece is an extremely religious country with 97% of the population being Orthodox Christians). Greece's churches are famed for their highly decorated interiors and are full of character, so both Christians and non-Christians alike will be fascinated.
Of course Greece is also home to the Athens Acropolis and many other sites of archeological and architectural fascination including the site of Ancient Olympia.
Greece's religious nature lends itself to an impressive culture of which the Greeks are righly proud. Traditions, superstitions, music, food and wine all play an role in making Greece an incomparable destination
With hot summers (temperatures reaching the high twenties!) and mild winters, it makes for ideal holiday weather!
Saronic Islands / Spetses area
The name Spetses derives from “Isola de Spezzie”, the Island of Fragrance, a name given by the Venetians due to the many herbs growing on the mountains of the island. The island is famed for its vegetation, in particular its pines.
Spetses is unique in that it has only one major settlement, itself divided into five districts, which are all reachable by foot or using the local bus. Another delightful way of exploring the island is by taking one of the distinctive horse drawn carriages.
The main draw of Spetses has to be its beautiful beaches, with their golden sands and white and multi-coloured pebbles leading down to sapphire waters. The most popular beach is Agia Marina, just a stone's throw from Villa Niki, with a beach bar and various taverns where you can soak up the local atmosphere. In contrast to the activity of Agia Marina is the stunning beach of Zogeria, hidden in a cove and accesible via a dirt track, this has to be one of the island's most beautiful spots.
Spetses provides you with the perfect opportunity to let your adventurous side out, with a whole host of water sports on offer!
Why not take advantage of the island's water taxi service to get around and visit the other beaches, including Bekiri’s Cave (which partisans and Greek revolutionary leaders used as a hiding place during the War of Independence in 1821) or Vrellos and Agia Paraskevi?
Dapia is the current centre of Spetses town, where restaurants and cafes are concentrated in the cobblestoned Clock Square. Here you will also find the Spetses museum and the Anargyros mansion, one of the finest examples of early twentieth century architecture.
Spetses brings together 17th, 18th, 19th and early 20th century architectural style, a testomy to its rich history. Traditional clay roof housing can be found in Kastelli, the town's oldest district. The other districts of Kounoupitsa (where Spetses town hall is worth a visit), Baltiza (the old harbour which remains the hub of the ship building industry and where you can admire the many boats and yachts during the summer months) and Analipsa, all bear witness to this architectural diversity.
Like all of Greece Spetses is not without its local festivals. The most important of these is Easter, when you can witness the buring of an effigy of Judas on Easter Sunday and the midnight burning of an old fishing boat in Analipsa. The island also hosts the Anargiria art festival in August with many cultural events taking place. Spetses has a weel long Armada festival culminating on September 8th, with a spectacular reenactment of the fire-bombing of the Ottoman fleet and flag-ship by the Spetsiote fleet which happened on this day in the year of 1821.
Spetses has a very varied nightlife, with bars, discos and bouzouki (traditional Greek instrument) clubs all over the town.
It is well worth climbing (by foot or motorbike) the highest point of the island, Mount Profitis Ilias, when you will be rewarded with spectacular views. Excursions on the hydrofoils can also be made to the nearby islands of Hydra and Poros as well as the Peloponnese coast.
