The Attica region

It is hard to find a country with a richer history than Greece with the first settlement dating from 11.000-3000 BC making it an extremely exciting destination to explore! An infamous mythology adds to the varied cultural fabric of the country. This all provides stunning architecture for the visitor to admire including many churches (Greece is an extremely religious country with 97% of the population being Orthodox Christians). Greece's churches are famed for their highly decorated interiors and are full of character, so both Christians and non-Christians alike will be fascinated.

Of course Greece is also home to the Athens Acropolis and many other sites of archeological and architectural fascination including the site of Ancient Olympia.

Greece's religious nature lends itself to an impressive culture of which the Greeks are righly proud. Traditions, superstitions, music, food and wine all play an role in making Greece an incomparable destination

With hot summers (temperatures reaching the high twenties!) and mild winters, it makes for ideal holiday weather!

Saronic Islands / Hydra Island area

The island of Hydra makes up part of the Argo-Saronic Islands and is blessed with an incredible, unspoilt beauty attracting thousands of holiday makers each year. The island is made up of many small towns and villages including the capital Hydra Town, Kaminia and Vlichos.

Despite being the capital Hydra Town itself is a small settlement, hidden from view in a small, natural harbour and is a protected site. Full of traditional architecture the local form of transport is donkey, with motor vehicles being prohibited! There are many wonderful cafes and restaurants, museums of interest, shops and a vibrant nightlife, where tradional past meets modern day!

Many other towns and villages can be reached by water-taxi from Hydra Town.

Like everywhere else in Greece, many festivals are celebrated on Hydra, with dancing, music, food and drink until dawn! Each saint and church of the same name has its own Saint's day which are celebrated in traditional Greek style. Easter is the main festival on Hydra and is a unique experience that is not to be missed, with candle light services and the immersion of Christ's Tomb into the sea at Kamini on Good Friday. Other festivals unique to Hydra include the Miaoulia Festival clebrating the Hydriot hero Admiral Andreas Miaoulis, with a week long programme of cultural events including athletic contests, folk dances, fireworks and great fun all night long!
During July and August The Summer Cultural Festival takes place, organised by the local authorities this consists of art shows, dance performances, puppet shows and recitals.Fun for all the family!
Art exhibitions are often to be found on the island, where local artists display their work in cafes, galleries and even on the street!

The island is scattered with museums, many of which are housed in old mansions such as the Historical Archive Museum or The Koundouriotis Mansion in Hydra Town, one of the finest examples of the Island's architecture.

Beaches are not Hydra's main attraction and tend to be pebble, but with everything else that Hydra has to offer. this is no major drawback!

How to get there

The Saronic Islands and Hydra are easily reached by taking one of the regular ferries from Piraeus, Poros, Methana and Aegina or the daily ferry from Spetses.

For a quicker journey time catch one of the Flying Dolphins hydrofoils from Piraeus. There are also regular services from Spetses, Hermioni and Porto Heli.

Due to its unspoilt location there is no airport on Hydra.

The nearest airport is Athens International (Eleftherios Venizelos), from where you can catch an express bus , metro, train or taxi to the port of Piraeus and take one of the ferries to Hydra.

For cheap flights to Athens search on www.greeka.com/greece/greece-flights.htm.

Because of its landmark status the use of cars and motorcycles is prohibited on Hydra.
