The Attica region

Hydra is one of the Saronic Islands of Greece, located in the Aegean Sea between the Saronic Gulf and the Argolic Gulf. It is separated from the Peloponnese by narrow strip of water. In ancient times, the island was known as Hydrea (?????, derived from the Greek word for "water"), which was a reference to the springs on the island.

There is one main town, known simply as "Hydra port" . It consists of a crescent-shaped harbour, around which is centered a strand of restaurants, shops, markets, and galleries that cater to tourists and locals (Hydriots). Steep stone streets lead up and outwards from the harbor area.

Saronic Islands, Hydra

Hydra Town offers a steep, horseshoe-shaped harbor with an array of shops and goods to offer—everything from top designer labels and jewelry to fine antiques and high quality leather goods, The harbor creates an atmosphere where yachting and sailing are a way of life. The deep-blue, crystal-clear waters of the Saronic Gulf are more than adequate for docking large yachts. Water activities on Hydra are abundant, including: fishing, yachting, sailing, snorkeling, and scuba diving, kite surfing, kayaking and windsurfing.

There are a number of restaurants and tavernas offering everything from freshly-caught seafood to grilled delicacies. With its variety of restaurants, seaside views and serene beauty, this is truly one of the most exquisite of the Greek islands

One of the reasons Hydra has attracted top VIPs from business and celebrities from the entertainment field, as well artists, poets and writers, are the ethereal beauty of the island and the lack of motorized vehicles. One can enjoy a pleasant walk to the beach or take a water taxi to one of the unpolluted and unspoiled beaches. A horse-and-carriage is also available for getting around on the small island and donkeys-for-hire. There are many famous people who own property on the island but, out of tact, we will not mention names. Suffice it to say, these high profile residents have dedicated themselves to maintaining the aesthetic appeal and beauty of Hydra.
