The Marche / Abruzzo / Marche region
Cities and villages, all rich in history and pecious works of art of the Roman, Medieval and Renaissance ages, are found in this region. The land of the Marches is the birthplace of great artists, poets, musicians and jurists. The great names of Raphael, Bramante, Leopardi, Rossini, Spontini, Pergolesi, Gentile da Fabriano, Carlo Maratta, Bortolo da Sassoferrato, Filelfo da Tolentino and many others.
Far from the great roads of communication, lying between the Apennines and the sea, in the distant past the Marches led its own life and was little known. Corresponding to the suggestive and harmonious distribution of artistic testimony abounding in the region is the variability of its hilly landscape, tranquil and animated to a correct degree in proportion.
It is generally believed that in distant times the Marches was inhabited by Umbrians, Etruscans and Gauls, then by the Picenes, who, descending the Sabines in fulfilment of a sacred spring vow, were led, according to legend by a bird, the woodpecker, and spread in the north almost as far as the present border with Romagna. 3 centuries before Christ, Rome subjugated the Piceno, which it held until the fall of the empire; then it passed to the Frank and Saxon emperors who changed its name to “MARCHES”, border land. In the subsequent feudal period first the overlords came to power, then the communes, and finally the Church governed the region until the unification of Italy (1860).
