Review Title : 107514 - "Our Dordogne Holiday"
"Just returned from an enjoyable weeks stay at Les Combarelles du Repaire. (14 -21 June 2008)
The property appeared to be brand new and everything was clean. Despite seeing the pictures on the web site, the house was larger than we had anticipated. There are four large bedrooms with lovely views across the garden and woodland with even a chateau in the distance. Three bathrooms with toilet, wash basin and excellent showers (no bath). English owners, Stephen and Donna met us on arrival and ensured our needs were catered for, including some provisions for Sunday until shops opened on Monday morning. Ample supply of towels, tea towels and consumables such as cling film, foil, food bags, soap and toilet paper. Stephen returned mid week to attend to the pool. The pool and surrounding paved terrace area was very pleasant with shaded area for eating out and for relaxing. Although the pool is unheated, it was 21 degrees on arrival and a pleasant 25 degrees on departure after a few days of sunshine. Despite their lack of maturity, the well tended garden areas were very colourful and we saw a variety of birds including jays and woodpeckers. Deer were seen although not actually in the garden, but we understand they do pay an occasional visit.
We visited the historic towns of Cenac, Domme, La Roque Gageac, Beynac, Sarlat, Gourdon and Rocamadour. We found everywhere very quiet with very little traffic and no problems with parking, although I understand this changes in July and August. If you enjoy gardens, walking and spectacular views take a trip to Marquessac (off the D703 between La Roque Gageac and Beynac). We enjoyed half a day including lunch there. Entrance fee reasonable at under 7 Euro each. A day canoeing down the Dordogne is highly recommended. We took a minibus with canoes in tow from Enveaux, which is 3km downstream of Beynac, up to our starting point at Carsac. Due to the speed of the river, we travelled the 28 km back to Enveaux with very little effort in about five hours, including a couple of stops en-route for ice creams and a picnic lunch. Whether it will be the same later in the season when the water level in the river is lower I do not know. Although we did not partake ourselves, the Airparc at Enveaux with rope bridges, and high wire walking between the trees with zip-wire descents looked fun.
I would certainly recommend a stay at Les Combarelles du Repaire and also the beauty of this area of France. "
