Sarlat Merchant's House
House | 3 bedrooms | sleeps 6
The house is on rue Magnanat in the very centre of Sarlat. Located just off the town square (Place Liberte), this house in the Merchant's quarter of ancient Sarlat is a cool refuge from the long hot summers in the region - providing an 'on the doorstep' position for the town's rich history along with its brasseries, restaurants, bars, cafes and markets.
A full description of the Merchant's House and Sarlat can be viewed on the house website at sarlathouse.com
Over three floors, the house is approximately one third of an original mansion building built in the middle ages and developed as a stand-alone house in the 17th century. The house was built by the Mirandol family of fabric merchants and occupied by Count Mirandol (Deputy of the Dordogne) up to the 19th century.
Newly refurbished to a very high standard, the house retains much of its original architecture,,and includes quality furnishings, antiques and highly specified electrics and heating ( for winter visitors ).The house has massive stone walls, stone fireplaces, high ceilings, very tall windows all facing onto rue Magnanat, eighteenth century paneling, parquet and stone tiled floors.
Contemporary facilities include - walk-in showers with digital controls, highly specified kitchen equipment and media technology that includes free WiFi, Apple Airplay, Smart HD TV, DVD, surround sound with UK and French digital TV channels.

The Aquitaine/Dordogne region
For those new to the region, online searches for places of interest re architecture, history, sports, walking, cycling and motoring will reveal a volume that would demand many a visit - which is what a great many people do. Irrespective of age, the area and wider region affords some incredible and memorable holiday experiences.
As there is so much more than can be remotely done justice here - please do online searches on local chateaux, gardens, grottes, castles, churches and abbeys, bastide town's, weekly markets, the Dordogne river ( canoeing and swimming ) walking and cycling, restaurants and brasseries.
We provide a comprehensive brochure pack for our guests to give pointers to exploration and can give detailed advice via email when a booking is made.
Sarlat is a vibrant and fascinating place to visit or, as it is the perfect central location to the wider region, to spend an entire holiday. Whilst physically compact, the ancient town is a maze of narrow, winding, and almost entirely pedestrian streets that are lined with restaurants, brasseries, bars, cafes and shops. Twice a week, the town is permeated with outdoor markets. Through the long summers it is host to a myriad of musicians and events and in the evenings the town is alive with restaurants spilling out onto the gas-lit streets.
Dating from both medieval and renaissance times and untroubled by development or much in the way of maintenance, in the 1960's the town centre of ancient Sarlat became the second of France's major restoration projects. As a result, most of Sarlat's major buildings and more than fifty private structures were restored as close to their original style as possible. Sarlat now uniquely retains much of the visual character of an ancient town and has become the most famous in the region and the first major visitor destination outside of Paris.
Only recently have the limits of the famous local cuisine of duck / foie gras / truffles been felt in Sarlat...., there are now new enteprises opening to extend choice including brasseries, Asian restaurants, tapas bars and (about five miles out of the centre) an approximation of a country pub - in a fantastic rural setting, with excellent humour, food and Guinness (please ref The Black Duck).
