Home description
Our holiday home is a fully restored 17th century stone farmhouse in over 1.6 acres of gardens. It is located in a quiet, shallow valley with very few houses near by and un interrupted views of the countryside. From the paved terrace you overlook our orchard of walnut trees and the decked swimming pool area. There are stone steps cut into the natural rock leading down toward the orchard and pool. There’s enough parking for four or more cars in the driveway between the two buildings (we do not let the tiny cottage opposite the main building).
The swimming pool (15m x 5m, 1m to 2m deep) is set in a decked area and has a hard cover that must be closed when not in use. The swimming pool has recently been restored and it has stair steps instead of a ladder for ease of use. The pool is approximately 25 yards from the house and can be seen from the patio next to the lounge.
The house is traditional “Perigordian style” constructed from local stone with wooden beams and floorboards. It is actually built onto an outcropping of rock on the side of the valley. It was fully restored during the 1970’s.
There are four bedrooms upstairs - two doubles, a twin and a triple. One of the doubles has a cloakroom en suite. There is a cot available which will fit in any of the rooms comfortably.
The Kitchen has all mod-cons including dishwasher – handy if there’s a large group of you staying. The table seats ten, extended. There is also a barbeque for cooking al fresco in the summer. The living room is separated from the kitchen by a few steps down. You can see almost half the length of the inside of the building, right into the grand fireplace. The lounge is very cosy, with two sofas around the fireplace, and beautiful carved furniture. The property is centrally heated but if you rent during the winter months we suggest you enjoy an open log fire – firewood is provided.
Also on the ground floor through the hallway, is the games room. This end of the house is pretty much self-contained with a small fitted kitchen, a shower room / WC and the triple bedroom above. Handy if you are large groups with different routines.
Carlux, the immediate area is very sleepy and picturesque. It has a modest castle, shops and a post office. Souillac, a 10 minute drive, has a large supermarket with parking and an open market selling local produce opposite. The historic town of Sarlat is also a short drive from the house. Sarlat is an impressive medieval town with tiny cobbled streets, lots of restaurants and market spaces. The area is also dotted with chateaus, many with magnificent grounds museums and balloon rides. The prehistoric paintings in the caverns of Lascaux are also a major tourist attraction in the area.
Our holiday home is in a quiet and undisturbed area yet is within easy reach of the main tourist attractions.

The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Dordogne region
The Dordogne is an area of outstanding natural beauty, one of the most beautiful in Europe, not dissimilar to Tuscany. This is a green land of farms, lovely wooded hillsides and gentle winding rivers. It is still unspoilt, it is really rural France at its best. The Dordogne is also one of the gastronomic centres of France after Lyon, famous for its foie gras, duck, truffles, mushrooms and seafood. There are many excellent inexpensive restaurants in the area using traditional cooking recipes
Sarlat / Cazoules area
The historical town of Sarlat is only 15 mins drive or you could visit the archaeological site at Lascaux II, just 8km. For the more active you can try riding and tennis at Montignac, where there are also cafés, supermarket, restaurants and shops (5km).
