The Aquitaine/Dordogne region

The Dordogne offers dramatic scenery which is interspersed with pretty towns and villages, both in the hinterland and along the Dordogne/Vezère rivers, plus innumerable châteaux, caves, museums, picnic spots and viewpoints. The four main areas are: Purple Périgord, in the southwest, named after its vineyards; the Green Périgord lies to the north; the Périgord Black, centred on Sarlat, named after its dense forests; and finally the White Périgord that covers the limestone countryside around Périgueux.

You cannot speak of the Dordogne without mentioning the wonderful food this region has to offer. This is an area world renowned for truffles, walnuts, duck, goose and foie gras - with the local markets overflowing with local produce and at every corner you will see signs offering opportunities to sample and buy local products.

Sarlat is the finest example of a Medieval walled town in France. With it's carefully preserved buildings, Sarlat is a wonderful place to explore. Amongst it's pretty cobbled streets and alleyways with their small arched passgeways, you will find ancient half timbered, turreted and gabled stone buildings. On the towns pretty narrow streets sit, numerous cafés, restaurants and shops selling all types of local delicacies. Saturday and Wednesday mornings the famous Sarlat market is held. Where you can enjoy the sights, smells and tastes of locally produced foods . Popular activities are canoeing, cycling and walking or for those long lazy days of summer you simply spend the day swimming or sunbathing one the river's many pebbled beaches.
