The Aquitaine/Dordogne region
La Tabatière is situated in the centre of the most beautiful and historic part of the Dordogne valley with the famous villages of Domme, La Roque Gageac, Montfort, Sarlat, Castelnaud and Beynac are within a distance of between 4 and 11 kms. 6kms directly south of Sarlat and 5 kms from the bastide village of Domme, the property is located approximately 30 minutes west of the paris/Toulouse A20 motorway and 1 hour east of Bergerac airport.
Within the golden triangle of Sarlat, Domme and Beynac, the setting is peaceful and tranquil, (ideal for walking and cycling) yet within 150 metres of the clear clean Dordogne river where you can swim, picnic, sunbathe, fish or canoe. The fine golf course of "Domaine de Rochebois" is 2km away. The village of Vitrac, justa 5 mins walk, has two excellent restaurants for lunchtime and evening dining.
To the north are the Lascaux caves and many prehistoric sites and museums. Caves with giant stalactites abound and the underground lake, the "Gouffre de Padirac" to the east is well worth a visit, as is the pilgrimage village of Rocamadour. Only 6 kms away is the medieval delight of Sarlat with its own drama, music and film festivals as well as a famous Saturday market and several large supermarkets.
The valley of the River Dordogne is dotted with fortress chateaux perched on cliff-tops. One of the best ways to see them is by canoe, which you can hire in the summer, to make the spectacular journey down river to Josephine Baker's chateau "Les Milandes", past some of the most picturesque villages in France. Transport is provided to get you back home. Bicycles can also be hired locally. Cycling along the riverside, through fields of wild flowers, on your way to purchase your "baguette" from the nearest village is just one of the pleasures awaiting you.
