The Aquitaine/Dordogne region

Lush, green Dordogne valley and hills. Such a variety of trees and birds. Climate is warm, sunny and can be hot in July and August.

So many places of interest for historians, archealogists, artists and musicians and for the whole family lots of different types of attractions including outdoor woodland activity areas, picnic areas, the river with shingle beaches here and there to sit and enjoy. Domme where the Knights Templar were incarcerated during the 100 years war, forts and chateaux, caves where early man dwelled and even some were still in use in the 1960's!

Sarlat

Sarlat with the medieval buildings, restaurants, shops and amazing cake shops! With several free music festivals including 21st June (annual national music festival), Quatorze Juillet (Bastille Day) with different types of musicians, bands and dancers around the streets and squares and a firework finale.

Souillac also has music festivals and particularly jazz in July.

Carlux has a music festival and their Fetes des Crépes is incredible in August.

Simeyrols opens the beautiful, tiny 14thC church for a concert in June and has a soiree on 28 August.

Most of the surrounding villages have fetes throughout the summer on Sundays and several have market days throughout the summer where traditional food is cooked and served in the evenings.

"Absolutely loved our stay"

My friend and I were first-timers to the Dordogne area, but we had researched a number of sites we wanted to visit. Upon arrival we realized that Nieudegat was the perfect base for us. It's centrally situated with easy access to markets and attractions all around while still being removed from tourist hustle and bustle. My friend loves to walk and found peaceful routes to surrounding villages. I love to wake up slowly and write in my journal. Every morning I was treated to the most beautiful bird symphonies right outside our gite. Olwen and Mike were the perfect hosts offering suggestions as well as friendship. They even helped us with a parking warning we received! I am proud to say that we were the first Americans to stay at Nieudegat. I'm sure there will be more Yanks to follow! A stay at Nieudegat is sure to enhance your memories of the Dordogne.

Thank you for your review and for leaving your gite in such clean and tidy order. We were delighted to have you as our first American guests. Our conversations with you were interesting and informative, in fact, extremely helpful for us too. Enjoy your future travels and we would love to see you again.

"Fantastic Location with Beautiful Views"

We stayed here with my wife and daughters aged 20 & 17 for 5 nights in August. These have a fantastic location away from it all but near enough to Sarlat where you have all facilities and great restaurants. Olwyn was very helpful and gave you all places to go and places to eat, all recommendations were good. The Gites are comfortable and have all necessary facilities. The swimming pool is fantastic and the girls wanted to come back to it every afternoon for sunbathing and swimming before going out for dinner.Hired canoes and completed 16km trip down the Dordogne

Thank you for your lovely review. We would also recommend your family as perfect guests and enjoyed meeting you all. We did and do have internet access around the property and near the pool and had a booster installed in the first gite in July to give better access at the gites and, would have been pleased to help you get connected if we had known this was not working at the far end, so apologies for this. Best regards, Olwen.

"Friendly, relaxed and fun"

We arrived later than expected (8hrs from St Malo) and needing a cuppa. Olwen and Mike were great - leaving us to get settled, but providing tea, milk, bread and eggs -gratefully accepted.
At first I thought the gite might be a little small. - what do I know? it was perfect! We had the one on the end which had the benefit that noone walked past, so no need for preening.
The kids slept together on the sofa bed downstairs (steep stairs) - This was easily big enough and they loved hunting outside for bugs (jars thoughtfully provided by the hosts).
As I think a previous contributor mentioned, the pool was FAB and we had it to ourselves most of the time. - great for bombing! we only shared it with bats in the evening. as the temp soared to around 40 that's where we stayed a lot of the time.
Anyway - go - you'll be well looked after.

Glad you found us and enjoyed your holiday and your daughters are delightful and it was a pleasure to discuss wildlife, birds and bugs with them. For the information of prospective future guests, the 'bombing' mentioned was respectfully done when you had the pool to yourselves and only in the deepest, centre area of the pool. A joy to see people making full use of the pool and terrace.

"Hospitality and magnificent natural surroundings"

We are a family from Spain with a toddler. We booked quite late and didn't expect much but Nieudegat has really surprised us. The natural surroundings are beautiful especially if you are interested in wildlife watching. There are only six appartments so the swimming pool is never crowded and we could both swimming for sport or playing with the baby. It is a peaceful place where you can read or take a glass of wine in silence at night while seeing stars. Simeyrols, the village, is small and charming and the Mairie even offered a klavicord concert during our stay. The appartment is nicer than in the picture (appartment 5) We would also like to mention the hospitality of Olwen, she was very helpful in providing information and even became a friend of our daughter.

A lovely family, quiet and caring who left their gite in excellent order.

"a secret hideaway in beautiful Dordogne"

We could not speak more highly of Gites Niuedegat, nestled in the forest in a small hamlet only 15 minutes with a beautiful drive to stunning Sarlat. We spent one week in this lovely small gite that was spotlessly clean and with every amenity we required. There was even milk and biscuits in the fridge upon our arrival which was appreciated. The proprietor, Olwen Melling was so friendly and could not do enough for us. We had very unseasonal wet, cold weather but the gite was cosy and bright. When we did see the sun, it was delightful to sit on the terrace watching the sunset, listening to the chorus of birds in the forest and drinking a chilled rose with Olwen. From the gite, there were many walking trails and perfect cycling routes for those who enjoy an active outdoor holiday. A truly restful place to go home to after a busy day visiting the numerous tourist sites nearby.

Lovely to have guests who also like to speak French as we are always trying to improve our language skills. Excellent, interesting guests who took care of their gite.
