The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Dordogne region
Conveniently located near to the enchanting Perigord Noir towns of Sarlat, Domme and Les Eyzies, Les Milandes is ideally located to explore the regions' wealth of history and culture. Famous for gastronomic specialties including foie gras and truffles, the region boasts an array of vineyards, the fruits of which can be sampled in one of the many enjoyable restaurants nearby. Alternatively, the area is ripe for relaxation with the river banks to enjoy, quaint villages to discover and the impressive chateaux that line the banks of the Dordogne River to explore.
Sarlat itself must one of the medieval "gems" of Europe. Enjoy a coffee in the Place in Sarlat and imagine yourself transported back in time. It now enjoys good shops, several excellent restaurants and is lovely to just explore as around every corner you will find another sight to take your breath away.
Sarlat / Les Milandes area
The Chateau des Milandes overlooks the Dordogne river and was home to Josephine Baker. She awed Paris with her flamboyant revues in the first half of the twentieth century and later moved to Les Milandes where she famously adopted twelve children known as the "Rainbow Tribe". The Chateau now features an exhibition to her extraordinary life as well as parkland and formal French gardens. Well worth a visit, there are also falconry displays and a small restaurant.
Spend a day meandering down the river passing magnificent medieval castles, old stone bridges and breathtaking scenery - it's really lovely and you can enjoy a picnic on its banks.
You can also partake in a variety of outdoor activities including ballooning and flying, canoeing, caves, cycling, fishing, golf, markets, riding, tennis and vineyards.
