The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Dordogne region

The Dordogne area is full of renowned places. You will discover unspoilt nature, grandiose landscapes and a plethora of magical sights. Part of the Aquitaine region in Southwest France, just an hour’s drive to the east of Bordeaux, Dordogne Périgord is one of the largest and most picturesque départements in French, as well as being one of the most prolific in terms of its number of listed historic buildings.

Here you will discover unspoilt nature, grandiose landscapes and a plethora of magical sights teeming with history: the prehistoric deposits and caves in the Vezère valley, which bear witness to the presence of man in the Dordogne for the past 450,000 years; castles from the Middle Ages and Renaissance periods, testimony to the Hundred Years’ War and Wars of Religion that raged here (45 castles in the Périgord are open to the public); medieval villages full of character (10 of which are officially listed among the "Plus beaux villages de France" (France’s Most Beautiful Villages)); romanesque churches adorned with sculpted tympanums; water mills in the romantic landscapes of the Périgord Vert; and renowned "towns of art and history" such as Sarlat and Périgueux.

The Sarlat area

Sarlat, the capital of the Perigord Noir, is situated in the heart of a forested area – to the east of the great region of the Aquitaine and close to the Dordogne valley.

The name Sarlat itself, evokes both gastronomic and cultural pleasures. Its worldwide reputation is linked with its rich history from the Middle Ages onwards. Its evolution over the centuries has left it with an exceptional heritage.

Sarlat was the first place in France to be safeguarded by being restored under the Malraux law of 1964. Its classification as Ville d’Art et d’Histoire (Artistic and Historic Town), is testament to its high architectural quality. Its medieval lanes and its large, sunny squares, particularly lively on market days, create an agreeable atmosphere.
