The Dordogne region

Sarlat

Sarlat is a medieval town that developed around a large Benedictine abbey of Carolingian origin. The medieval Sarlat Cathedral is dedicated to Saint Sacerdos. Because modern history has largely passed it by, Sarlat has remained preserved and one of the towns most representative of 14th century France. It owes its current status on France's Tentative List for future nomination as a UNESCO World Heritage site to the enthusiasm of writer, resistance fighter and politician André Malraux, who, as Minister of Culture (1960–1969), restored the town and many other sites of historic significance throughout France. The centre of the old town consists of impeccably restored stone buildings and is largely car-free

The Dordogne

Dordogne is a department in south-west France. The départment is located in the region of Aquitane, between the Loire valley and the High Pyrenees named after the great river Dordogne that runs through it. It roughly corresponds with the ancient county of Périgord. In addition to its castles, chateaux, churches, bastides and cave fortresses, the Périgord region has preserved from centuries past, a number of wonderful villages which still have their market halls, dovecotes, tories (stone huts), churches, abbeys and castles. Saint-Leon-sur-Vezere, Connezac, Saint-Jean-de-Côle, La Roque-Gageac and many others are real jewels of architecture. As for the old quarters of Périgueux or Bergerac, restored and developed into pedestrian areas, they have regained their former charm. A number of small towns, such as Brantôme, Issigeac, Eymet and Mareuil, have withstood the often brash changes of modern times. A special mention should be made in this respect to Sarlat and its Black Périgord area.

Sarlat-la-Canéda

Located on the outskirts of the historic market town of Sarlat, Villa La Peyriere offers the perfect setting for exploring Perigord and the Dordogne.

Sarlat is centred in the heart of Perigord Noir and makes an excellent base from which to discover the local medieval and historic towns and villages such as Domme, Saint Cyprian, Les Eyzies, Montignac and Racamadour.

There are plenty of opportunities to enjoy outdoor activities such as cycling, hiking, canoeing or fishing in either the Dordogne or the Vezere Rivers or just laze about the pool enjoying the summer sun.

There are also several excellent markets in the local towns and villages, including the fabulous Sarlat Market held on a Wednesday and Saturday where local gourmet delicacies such as truffles, fois gras, local cheese and wine are on offer to the discerning palette.

In addition to the wonderful Perigordian cuisine, the region offers numerous opportunities to delve into some of Frances’ historic and prehistoric past. Visit the local towns and villages of the region and explore the historic gems such as Chateaux Castelnaud, Beynac and Biron. Not to be missed are the Lascaux Caves at Montignac with its prehistoric cave paintings and the Prehistory Museum at Les Eyzies.

Explore the picture postcard village of La Roque-Gageac, seemingly hanging precariously of the cliff face or visit Domme and experience vast panorama over the Dordogne valley. Entirely enclosed by walls this old Bastide town offers an amazing glimpse into the past.

Hello. We are very pleased you enjoyed your stay at Villa La Peyriere. Just a note on the two bedrooms that are a little dated, these will both be under going a full re decoration this coming winter and will be of the same standard as the master bedroom/studio early 2013.
