The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Dordogne region
Forming part of the Aquitaine region the department of the Dordogne ( also known as Périgord) is situated between the foothills of the Massif Central and the plains of the Aquitaine Basin in South West of France.
The Dordogneand Vézère rivers meander through this beautiful region of widely varying and spectacular scenery ranging from lush, oak-wooded hillsides to softer, undulating countryside rich with walnut groves and vineyards. Punctuated with romantic chateaux, a wealth of prehistoric caves, medieval architecture and beautiful villages of golden-ocre stone this region has much to offer its visitors. it benefits from a very pleasant climate with temperatures from 25 to 35°C in Summer.
Sarlat area
Sarlat is situated in the heart of Périgord Noir, that area of Dordogne which owes its name to the dark foliage of its oak woodlands and its coveted black truffles.
There are caves to visit, not only prehistoric with paintings (as at Lascaux and Les Eyzies) but also spectacular underground limestone caves ( at Domme and Le Grand Roc) and chasms ( at Proumeyssac). The flambuoyant chateaux at Beynac, Castlenaud, Hautfort rival those of the Loire valley.
The region boasts many gastronomique delights including foie gras ( rich goose liver), truffles ( exquisite black mushrooms), confit ( preserved duck) and Cabecou ( goats cheese). All can be savoured with locally produced wine from the Bergerac vineyards.
Sarlat has been described as "the jewel in the crown" with its medieval centre, architectural heritage, famous Saturday market and unique atmosphere provided by its street entertainment in Summer.
Within a 10km radius there are opportunities for walking, canoeing, golfing, cycling, horse riding, outdoor adventure activities, and lots more.
