Enquire nowThe Aquitaine / Dordogne / Dordogne region
The Dordogne region of South-West France is one of the most beautiful and popular regions of France.Chateaux, beautiful medieval towns and villages, unspoilt countryside and prehistoric caves are just some of the reasons why the region has been attracting visitors for many years.
Whatever your interests, the Dordogne will suit you. The scenery is magical, and just driving around on the tortuous country lanes through the forest and over the hills and along the rivers is pure pleasure. There are numerous "plus beaux villages de France," including Beynac. La Roque-Gageac, St-Leon-sur-Vezere, Domme, and Belves.
The markets are some of the finest in France, with many desginated as "marches de France." Just 5 minutes away the town of Sarlat, the market hub of the region, has been restored to its 17th-18th-century magnificence with such perfection that it is lit at night by gas lamps and is the set for myriad French movies.
The Dordogne region is best known for the castles (there are said to be 1001 castles in the Dordogne) the medieval villages and the beautiful countryside and scenery, as well as the warm and pleasant climate... and the great produce available from the Dordogne markets - many in spectacular locations, and with fascinating histories to tell (eg Chateau de Beynac; Chateau de Biron; Chateau de Bourdeilles; Chateau de Castelnaud; Chateau de Commarque; Chateau de Hautefort; Chateau de Jumilhac; Chateau de Montfort; Chateau de Puyguilhem; Chateau de Puymartin; Chateau des Milandes...).
Of course, one of the big draws of the region is food. The Perigord has been called the gastronomic capital of France with good reason. Here, foie gras and truffles (les diamants noirs du Perigord) are everyday fare, and every town has shops filled to overflowing with these local treasures. Other local specialities are confit of duck and goose, stuffed goose neck (it's good!), walnut cakes, chocolate-dusted walnuts, and walnut wine and liqueur. Local wines include Monbazillac, Bergerac, and Pecharma.
Restaurants abound, and it's hard to find a bad meal in the Perigord.
The Sarlat / Vitrac area
The area is a vacationers dream which offers unlimited activities for the whole family. We're only minutes from the stunning villages of La Roque-Gageac and the bastide town of Domme as well as the famous castles: Beynac Castlenaud, and Milandes.
Canoeing and kayaking on the rivers are popular sports, and there are plenty of rental outfits. One of the nicest ways to spend a day in the area is to pack a picnic, rent a couple of canoes, and glide down the Dordogne admiring the castles looming above you, then stop for a picnic on the riverbank watching the hot air balloons go by You can find all this and more within walking distance from your holiday home here in Vitrac.
ust 5 minutes drive away is the town of Sarlat which is packed with history, countless restaurants, abundance of shops, galleries, and entertainment including a movie theatre with English language films Capital of Black Périgord, Sarlat is an exceptionally preserved city. More than 1.000 years of architecture live through lanes, roofs of roofing stones and fair and hot stone walls. The medieval Sarlat Cathedral is dedicated to Saint Sacerdos.
The town of Sarlat La caneda has been able to maintain and preserve the marks of its history. As a monastic estate, it reached its peak in the 13th century. Sarlat Said to have been inhabited since Gallo-Roman times, Sarlat became a prosperous city at the end of the VIII century under the reign of Pepin le Bref and Charlemagne when the Benedictines established a monastery there. The centre of the old town consists of impeccably restored stone buildings and is largely car-free.
Sarlat is well known for its Foie gras and there are several large and some other smaller producers of geese and ducks in the region that make foie gras and other products such as confits, pâté, etc.

I was just reminiscing about our family visit! This holiday season, the kids asked when we could go back! We all enjoyed our stay so much, I am eagerly anticipating booking again! Every day we would get out walking around, doing a bit of sight seeing, dining at the local cafe and just enjoying every moment spent with the children! We were so pleased with the accommodations! Spacious, very well maintained, updated and clean! We couldn't have asked for a better experience! If you are looking for a great vacation where you can spend quality time with your loved ones, then look no further, this is the place! For those that may want to get out a bit further to explore more, I would recommend a car, although it is not needed to enjoy your time at this gorgeous place! |

We couldn't believe, what a location could not have been better. On arrival we were greeted with our welcome pack, which was great as we arrived late in the evening, when most things were closed. 1.Close to Sarlat within 10 mins 2.Within easy reach of the river beach and snack/bar. 3.Accomodation everything we need to hand 4.Brilliant BQ outside area. 5.Lovely walled garden All in all we had a fantastic time in Vitrac, I would recomend this Gite it was very clean, and good basic it delivered what it said on the label. The area itself was out of this world so much to see and do. |
