BookThe Aquitaine / Dordogne / Dordogne region
Discover 15,000 years of French history in the Dordogne, one of France's most beautiful and unspoilt regions. Starting from Les Eyzies, where 'Cro-Magnon man', one of the earliest modern humans, was first discovered, you can explore an ancient world of underground caves, historic castles, lush farmland and elegant châteaux. You can also take a boat along the Dordogne River, visit cliff-side villages, dine in majestic surroundings and wonder at the perfectly preserved prehistoric cave paintings of Grottes de Font-de-Gaume. In addition to its castles, chateaux, churches, bastides and cave fortresses, the Périgord region has preserved from centuries past, a number of wonderful villages which still have their market halls, dovecotes, tories (stone huts), churches, abbeys and castles. Saint-Leon-sur-Vezere, Connezac, Saint-Jean-de-Côle, La Roque-Gageac and many others are real jewels of architecture. As for the old quarters of Périgueux or Bergerac, restored and developed into pedestrian areas, they have regained their former charm. A number of small towns, such as Brantôme, Issigeac, Eymet and Mareuil, have withstood the often brash changes of modern times. The climate is very mild and pleasant, with generous sun from spring to autumn. The region has a merited very high reputation for excellent food and specialties, and most restaurants offer reasonably priced generous menus and local wines like Bergerac and Cahors as well as Bordeaux.

The Sarlat area
Sarlat is one of the most attractive and alluring towns in south-western France. Sarlat is a medieval town that developed around a large Benedictine abbey of Carolingian origin. Because modern history has largely passed it by, Sarlat has remained preserved and one of the towns most representative of 14th century France. It owes its current status on France's Tentative List for future nomination as a UNESCO World Heritage site to the enthusiasm of writer, resistance fighter and politician André Malraux, who, as Minister of Culture (1960-1969), restored the town and many other sites of historic significance throughout France. The centre of the old town consists of impeccably restored stone buildings and is largely car-free. Sarlat throughout the summer has an extensive program of music, arts, night markets, fairs and activities for all ages. The town of Sarlat has a wonderful food market each Wednesday and Saturday. Also Le Bugue offers an organic market on Tuesday and St Cyprien on Sunday. Hot air ballooning, canoeing on the Dordogne, cycling, golfing, hiking and hundreds of chateaux and caves to explore .

This was our first visit to the Dordogne though we have been visiting France for many years. We were not disappointed from the very beginning as Linda, George and Roosevelt greeted us on our arrival. The cottage had absolutely everything you would need for a most comfortable stay from an extremely well equipped kitchen, a spacious living room with ENGLISH TV!, DVDs, Music etc., all the linen you could possibly require including cosy towelling robes. The bedroom was beautiful and the bed soooo comfortable! A fabulous area outside the cottage to sit and relax with both shade and sun. If that wasn't enough a salt-water pool to die for overlooking the most spectacular views of the countryside. A truly perfect retreat for young couples, children and senior citizens alike. We are definitely going to return! |

What a wonderful holiday in a beautiful cottage. Everything we needed was there and nothing was too much trouble. Our hosts gave a wonderful example of how to be helpful without being intrusive. Linda's great advice made sure that we experienced the best that the Dordogne had to offer. After great days out we returned to relax by the pool and then finished the day off with a glass of wine (or two) in the hot tub, watching the sun set over the French countryside. I cannot recommend Butterfly Cottage highly enough. |
