The Rhone / French Alps / Drome region
Also known as Drome Provencal, you will certainly relax here surrounded by lavender fields, sunflowers and of course enjoying the occasional glass of locally produced red wine...
The area around Saou is blessed with the weather of the Cote d'Azur while enjoying the influence of the food "gastronomique" of Lyon. Rich in history, with ruined and restored castles perched on its many hill-tops, and with beautiful villages linked together by a network of quiet roads (ideal for cyclists), Drome Provencal presents an experience of France that has come straight out of the tourist guides.
Within easy reach of the village of Saou are the typical Provence markets of Nyons and Vaison-la-Romaine, the beautiful and impressive Gorges de l’Ardeche, the Carrieres du Roussillon with its spectacular ocre-coloured mountains, the beautifully preserved medieval town of Avignon (surrounded by the original fortified city walls and particularly famous for its bridge and Palace of the Popes), the Roman aquaduct near Nimes (Pont du Gard), the Vercors Natural Regional Park, the beautiful Vincent van Gogh's town of St Remy de Provence, the 'wine route' which will take you to Gigondas, Vacqueyras and Chateauneuf du Pape - just to cite a few!
Other famous region landmarks include the Chateau de Grignan, the Chateau de Suze-la-Rousse, and the extraordinary monuments including Palais Idéal built by the postman Cheval at Hauterives.
Spring time is sunny and refreshing while summers are long, hot and sunny (with the occasional spectacular electric storm)
This part of France truly has everything. Recent editions of French Property News included the following:
"The southern Ardeche and the southern Drome are truly magnificent, generous and seductive, stretching either side of the Rhone river just north of Langedoc and Provence respectively." (Sept 2008).
"The southern Drome is even more beautiful than the southern Ardeche. The quality of its produce is excellent, going from Cotes du Rhone and Coteaux de Tricastin wines to top-class olives, apricots, cherries lavender and truffles." (Sept 2008).
Saou area
The village of Saou is a stunning little hamlet with only 420 inhabitants, nestled in the hills and mountains of the Drôme.
Saou’s forest ‘La Foret de Saou’ is rich with wildlife and distinctly Mediterranean flora. The forest can be the start of a walk over the surrounding mountains such as the Trois Becs (the highest syncline in Europe at 1000m!) or just a relaxing picnic.
There is even a small brewery! The ‘Markus Biere’ microbrewery has a fantastic beer garden with views of the surrounding mountains, and offers tours and tastings of their delicious hoppy beer, rare in France. The restaurant on the main square is home to the atmospheric restaurant - L'Oiseaux sur sa Branche, serving fine cuisine in the evening. The other best place to eat in Saou is at ‘Le Cerise et Vinaigrette’ serving classic provincial dishes.
As you will see in one of the pictures, there is a local swimming spot just 5mns drive away where locals take a picnic and spend the day on the bank of the river, taking the occasional dip to cool down on long summer days.
Saou is also famous for its annual summer events ‘Saoû sings Mozart’. The tiny hamlet hosts an annual Mozart festival, Saoû chante Mozart, whose prestige stretches far beyond the confines of this scenic village dwarfed by the nearby Alps.
Concerts are held in churches, castles and market squares. […] Some 12 local villages join with Saoû to create France's only festival devoted to the genius of the Austrian composer. http://www.saouchantemozart.com/
The other big festival competing for top spot is the famous ‘Fete du Picodon’ (Picodon is the name of the local goat's cheese!) which provides a weekend filled with performances by local artists, arts and crafts market stalls, games and concerts. People come from all over France for the superb atmosphere and unique feel to this long standing traditional fete.
