The Costa de Prata/Silver Coast region
The resort town of Sao Martinho do Porto is located in the heart of the Silver Coast, 90 kilometers north of Lisbon, and has a lot to offer. In addition to all summer activities, it is located close to most of Portugal's World Treasures "UNESCO Sites": To the north, first in sequence is the Monastery in Alcobaca (Alcobassa), Circa 1147, Portugal's largest church, and home of the Cistercian Order of Monks , built to commemorate the defeat of the Moors that gave rise to Portugal's birth as the country we know today, UNESCO; Ten minutes further is Batalha Dominican Abbey, built to commemorate Portugals independence from the Kingdom of Leon and Castile that begun Portugal's second dynasty: This elaborate structure took 131 years to build from 1386 to 1517 (A must see), UNESCO; Just before Coimbra, is the remnants of the Roman Settlement of Conimbriga, Circa 200 BC: Julius Caesar's grandnephew (and adopted son) Emperor Octavian Augustus Caesar is recorded to have spend considerable time at Conimbriga whilst ruling the West-Europe frontier of the Roman Empire, UNESCO; A short distance north of Coimbra is the Bussaco forest and palace: The forest is composed of tree and plant species brought by Portuguese navigators from around the world that have over the centuries reseeded and propagated into the most unusual collection of biological varieties (biovars) found anywhere in the wild, and the palace hotel in the the middle of the forest, which was once upon a time a royal hunting lodge, is by itself definitely worth a visit. For those wishing to include a spiritual experience whilst on holiday, less than one hour east of Sao Martinho is the world renown catholic shrine of Fatima: Generally celebrates mass several times on Sundays, and some during weekdays.
From Sao Martinho going south, first in sequence is the medieval town of Obidos conquered from the Moors, Circa 1148: The Moors arrived Circa 713 and occupied the Obidos Hill taken from the Visigoths, and shortly thereafter begun construction of the defense wall encircling the city still standing today (A must see), UNESCO; Further south is the immense Library and Royal palace of Mafra - the library is by itself worth a visit; Southwest from Mafra is the enchanting (fairy tale) Pena Palace in Sintra, Circa 1854, by Arch. Whillelm Ludwig von Aschwege (A must see), UNESCO; A bit further South is the city of Lisbon, and in Lisbon one can visit the Jeronimos Cloister, resting place of Vasco da Gama's remains, UNESCO; the rich collection of royal coaches from around the world at the Coach Museum, and the Oceanarium built for the recent World's Fair celebrating 500 years of Portuguese maritime glory. We are fortunate to be in the hub of such abundance of World Treasures within one hour's drive!
To understand the Portuguese heart and soul, one should spend an evening at a Fado (Fahdo) House in Lisbon: The singers come and sing the Portuguese melancholic fahdo music without microphones accompanied by several Portuguese and Spanish guitars. "Senhor Vinho" in the Lapa district is the top - must make reservations in advance. The food is not outstanding, but the music is certainly worth going there for. Best to order a platter of shellfish and tapas to have with your favourite beverage. - "Kill two birds with one stone": Visit some of Lisbon's attractions during the day and go to Senhor Vinho at night, and if you feel like splurging, spend the night at the Lapa Palace Hotel around the corner from Senhor Vinho, where the likes of 'Madona' and 'Hillary Clinton' have stayed. The 'Lapa Palace' is an experience all by itself.
For wine tasting, Quinta dos Loridos in Bombarral, 25 minutes south from Sao Martinho do Porto, is an attraction worth visiting.
The Tourist Centre in Sao Martinho do Porto will provide additional info for the area.
Sao Martinho do Porto area
Medieval Market in Obidos: from July 12th until the 22nd, a re-enactment of the Medieval times, with costumes, food and music from the era. In August Sailing-Match in Sao Martinho do Porto. In September fish-festival in Peniche. Numerous cafes, restaurants, bars and shops are lining the beautiful horseshoe bay of Sao Martinho do Porto. July and August sports, games and dance at the beaches.
May we make some dining suggestions? Portugal is the least expensive country in Western Europe and holidaymakers opt to dine out frequently: In Sao Martinho do Porto you have several good choices of restaurants:
1. O’Farol on the beach itself has very good seafood, and if you time it right you may watch an amazing sunset over the ocean while enjoying dinner.
2. A’Casa on the promenade offers excellent fresh fish dinners; the service is sometimes a bit lethargic but otherwise excellent.
3. Carvalho in the town centre has very good seafood and is a good value for the area.
4. Baia do Oeste (in our building) offers wholesome Portuguese Cuisine and is a great value for the area.
Some specialties:
1. For a quick fun dinner, the takeout place on the train station square offers African style Chicken Piri-Piri that is to die-for; Oh, – and their chips, are to die-for as well. Must order about ¾ to one hour in advance as they only prepare custom orders. You can order on the way home and later walk across the tracks and train station to pickup; Very convenient, and virtually at our doorstep.
2. For an elegant dining experience, we recommend Sabores D’Italia in the town of Caldas da Rainha. The owner is a graduate of the “Cordon Blue” culinary institute and is among the best in Mediterranean Cuisine.
Cheers!
How to get there
For parties from outside Portugal we recommend flying to Portela Airport in Lisbon, 100 kilometers from Sao Martinho do Porto. From Lisbon you have two main options: One, rent a car at the airport (book in advance) and take A8 motorway north about 90 kilometres to the Sao Martinho do Porto exit and follow to Sao Martinho do Porto. Option two, hire a cab to take you to the bus station in Lisbon and go by coach straight to Sao Martinho do Porto. Once your booking is confirmed and you decide on one of the two options, we will provide you detailed information on how to get there from Lisbon.
The train station is within walking distance from the penthouse and provides an opportunity for fun day-trips to down-town Lisbon and other towns of interest up and down the coast. Must check return times from your destination to insure a ride back to base! Day-trips are also available by coach.

Guestbook for Edificio Infante
We had a really lovely stay in the penthouse and a great holiday - thanks very much. We will definitely recommend Sao Martinho to our friends and point them to your website!
Best wishes, Mark
Thank you, Louis. Your penthouse is lovely, it had a real Portuguese feel to it and Sally was very helpful. Anna and Shaun said it was well equipped and they felt safe. The beach at Sao Martinho is beautiful but we were very unlucky with the weather, the sky was overcast from the day we arrived and finally cleared on the day that we left!! Because of this, the pool was not used either. From speaking to other tourists, I gather that was quite unusual. We visited Foz de Arehlo and Obidos, and Anna and Shaun spent a sunny day in Lisbon. A great holiday although spoilt a little by the weather! Thanks again, Kate.
