The Costa de Prata/Silver Coast/Central Portugal region

The Costa de Prata/Silver Coast Region offers more than most other coastal regions as it has not been overdeveloped. The region is steeped in history from the days of the Napoleonic wars when battles raged between Napoleons forces and the British of Sir Arthur Wellesley – as featured in the “Sharpe” books and TV series.
Recommended places to visit (all within 1 hours drive) whilst staying in Sao Martinho do Porto are:

13th century walled medieaval town of Obidos and Lagoon. Incredible alleyways housing top end handicraft / gift shops and excellent dining
Peniche - town dominated by its fishing industry with superb harbourfront restaurants
Barlengas Islands - Nature reserve perfect for bird watchers. Approx 1 hour by ferry.
Santarem - gothic city , the town of Alpiarca and the palace, church and monastery at Mafra
Sintra - UNESCO world heritage site. Summer retreat palaces for the kings of Portugal
Northwards:
Alcobaca - another UNESCO site. Boasts Portugals largest church

Lisbon - a must do day trip - enjoys the best winter climate of any European city . You can walk across the centre of this beautiful city in 30 minutes. The hills of the Alfama and Bairro Alto are mazes of lanes and alleys - perfect for strolling and soaking up the ambience. Sampling the pastries at the Art-Nouveau cafes is a must. Taxis are plentiful and cheap, but the trams with wooden benches are great fun, offer better views and are even cheaper. Call in at the Lisbon Welcome Centre - Rua do Arsenal 15 or website www.atl-turismolisboa.pt to get the most from a visit to this fascinating city.
Whilst in Lisbon venture to the Port Wine Institute (Rua de Sao Pedro de Alcantara 45). It has every imagineable variety - ruby, white, tawny and vintage and also offers wine by the glass.
The Sao Martinho do Porto area
Sao Martinho's stunning and famous shell shaped bay allows safe family friendly bathing away from the powerful waves and currents of the Atlantic. The area has an ideal climate averaging between 26 - 34 C in summer and 14 - 18 C in winter. The sea is warmer here than further South. Temperatures drop overnight in summer allowing for comfortable sleeping conditions.
This old fishing town oozes Portugese charm and character whilst still being able to cater for tourist demands. The recently renovated seafront area is perfect for a stroll and its diverse range of restaurants, cafes and bars offer incredible views in this idyllic setting.
A daily morning market (except Mondays) provides fresh fruit, vegetables and bread plus a wide selection of local produce. There are several small supermarkets in the town itself and larger ones within a short driving distance.
Various boat and fishing trips can be arranged from the harbour and a new board walk through the sand dunes to Salir do Porto has just been constructed. Many activities including various water sports, horse and mountain bike riding can all be organised in the town. Visit www.visit-sao-martinho-do-porto.com for further details.
Portugal is the cheapest Western European country so holidaymakers opt to eat out most nights. Recommended restaurants are :-
A Casa - Excellent service and fresh fish you can choose.
Carvalho - on Main St in the Old Town Centre - level with the back of Hotel Atlantica - very good value.
O Farol - located on the beach with the best views - good value.
Also try Hotel Capitao for afternoon tea on the verandah. A real treat.
In essence Sao Martinho is a lively resort but with families and couples very much in mind. Bars stay open late during the busy months but you will have to look further afield for nightclubs.

The apartment was very good, and we loved Sao Martinho. We may well be back! Surfoz Surf school was great. Carvhalio was my favourite restaurant - attached to Atlantic Hotel and I was really impressed and surprised at the quality of the Portuguese regional wines that would stand up to any Rioja.

We had a really brilliant time out there. The apartment was lovely, well equipped and tastefully attired. The town is laid back and picturesque, with a strong on emphasis on providing services for the tourists whilst preserving the local communities and traditions, particularly in the restaurants which catered a tantalising array of locally caught seafood.
Sue - Jan 10
A fantastic few days in a wonderful apartment/complex. Weather beautiful (18c and sunny) that allowed us to wander around Sao Martinho and the surrounding towns of Nazare, Sitio and Obidos without distraction. The local people are very friendly and helpful. The food was delicious and I can particularly recommend Portobellos and Martinhos (10% discount to Atlantico Golf visitors) in Sao Martinho and Meu Jardin (wonderful fish dishes) on the road to Nazare. Pure heaven and I look forward to my next visit!

What a well-appointed apartment, so light and airy with plenty of room and lots of storage space. The kitchen is particularly well fitted out and equipped. We loved wandering round Sao Martinho do Porto which is within walking distance of the apartment. Lots of restaurants serving local delicacies. We liked Martinho's with very friendly English proprietor (closed on Mondays!) and Restaurante Carvalho attached to the Atlantic Hotel. Both good value. Very large supermarket less than a mile from the apartment. Among other places, we visited Obidos (large walled town on a hill), Sitio/Nazare connected by a funicular railway, and Alcobaca which has the largest church in Portugal and is a World Heritage Site. We really enjoyed our week there especially as we had cloudless blue skies, with temperatures 27-30 c. Would definitely consider going again and are recommending it to anyone who asks.
Tina - June 10 - Sao Martinho and the Silver Coast in general is beautiful. Obidos and the beach at Foz is stunning. Your apartment is lovely, nice and spacious with everything you need and I will definitely recommend your place to friends .
Margaret - June 10 - We really enjoyed our stay in the apartment, it was like home from home and the Silver Coast area, especially San Martino, is so pretty and unspoilt
Emma Aug10 - We had a fabulous time in Sao Martinho! The apartment is wonderful and provided us with everything we needed and location wise it was perfect - everything was an easy distance. The pool area is lovely and never busy. All in all - it was perfect - other than we wish we had gone for longer!
Kati July 11 - we really did enjoy our stay in SMDP. The apartment was lovely - even better than we thought, well equipped, nicely located and it worked well for our 2 families. We found the information folder extremely useful - we visited the interesting towns nearby and tried many of the restaurants recommended. We will definitely recommend the apartment to our family and friends. Thanks again.
Chris - August 11 - We had a great time, again - even better than last year. Obidos is always good, and we went further afield to Tomar and Constancia, which we would thoroughly recommend. Tomar is on a river and incredibly pretty - Constancia is a small village with a riverside beach and bars. We went to the Caldas boating lake which the kids loved. We'll be back like a shot when we get the opportunity - thanks again for a brilliant stay.
